About the Finance Team

Our small, but mighty Finance team is looking for a new team member to build out the financial controls function. The Finance team has three core functions: Accounting and Reporting, Treasury and FP&A. We take ownership of the financial health of Varo and are critical partners for Varo leadership in charting the path to where no bank has been before. 


About the Financial Controls Manager role

We’re looking for a Financial Controls Manager to design, implement and manage the Company’s internal controls over financial reporting. Our ideal candidate has a curious mind and a desire to design and implement controls collaborating with business partners and back office. We hope to add to our team an individual with a diverse background that includes financial comprehension, business process understanding, data analytics experience, and strong written communication skills. 


The candidate will act as the subject matter expert on all financial controls matters and participate in business product and feature development to ensure the right controls are stood up from the beginning. 

What you'll be doing

  • Ensure that the Company has established a sound system of internal controls over financial reporting to ensure reliable and timely financial information by:
  • Designing, assessing, implementing and monitoring a robust controls framework, governance and methodology.
  • Mapping to the COSO internal controls framework; governance; program management; materiality & tolerances; scope; implementation plan
  • Identify, assess, document in standard SOX documentation format and monitor business processes and financial systems that affect financial reporting
  • Lead, document and report on risk assessment of the business processes in respect of materiality & tolerances misstatements in financial reporting
  • Develop policies for controls and control objectives for core financial reporting processes
  • Work with process owners to scope, design, and implement controls to address key risks and ensuring design adequacy and operating effectiveness of financial controls
  • Develop and implement the controls testing process, including conducting reviews and testing of financial reporting controls compliance by process owners along with monitoring and overseeing the remediation of deficiencies identified
  • Prepare and manage the ongoing reporting process to senior management and committees
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors to ensure the effectiveness of the controls are tested and the resolution of any audit findings
  • Provide ad hoc reports and status on above responsibilities
  • Work on projects / initiatives as assigned
  • Work closely with stakeholders across functions in a fast-paced environment, able to provide solution to issues
  • Stay current on best practices and latest thinking regarding processes, risk management and controls
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and communicate with different cultures and levels within the organization 

Required skills and experiences

  • CPA, CIA or equivalent
  • Knowledge of accounting for consumer banking products
  • Experience in setting up financial controls program in a financial institution
  • Experience in management reporting on financial controls status
  • Managing implementation and remediation of financial controls
  • Collaborating with internal and external audit teams
