About the Risk Management Team 

We’ve assembled a group of world-class risk professionals who are passionate about protecting Varo and its customers from harm. The Risk Team is core to the mission of Varo in a digital, growing economy. The ERM/ORM team focuses on identifying, assessing, monitoring, mitigating and reporting on all aspects of operational risk, including risk and control assessments, issue and event management, third party risk, model governance and business resiliency. About the Head of ERM/ORM Role

You will be a key member of the Risk Management leadership team and will work across the bank to help identify, assess, monitor and mitigate operational risk.


The Head of ERM/ORM will be responsible for overseeing all Enterprise Risk Management and Operational Risk Management areas including New Product Approval, Third Party Risk Management, RCSAs, Business Continuity Planning and Model Risk Governance.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead a team of risk professionals with responsibilities for New Product Approval, Third Party Risk Management, RCSAs, Business Continuity Planning and Model Risk Governance.
  • Design and manage the GRC framework using the Archer GRC Tool
  • Manage Issue and Event management
  • Manage the reviews and approval of Policies, Programs, Standards and Charters
  • Expand the GRC tool to additional use cases and maintaining the libraries for process, risk and control
  • Enhance and lead the Operational Risk program
  • Assist business owners in identifying and measuring operational risks and effective controls through a risk and control self-assessment across the Bank for all critical processes at least annually
  • Manage the identification, assessment, monitoring and mitigation of operational risks in all categories of operational risk: fraud; execution, delivery and process management: client, products and business practices; business continuity and system failure; employment practice and workplace safety; damage to physical assets
  • Track operational risk events within the GRC tool and ensure proactive root cause analysis and evaluate, characterize and provide mitigation remediation strategies
  • Engage with business owners and facilitate the development and/or update of process flow diagrams for critical processes and identify process gaps and track these issues in the GRC tool through resolution
  • Lead ERM Assessment and Reporting including preparing materials for Risk Management Committee and Audit and Risk Committee of the Board meetings on a quarterly basis
  • Lead the quarterly Risk Management Committee meetings
  • Conduct ERM risk assessment and surveys and produce ERM dashboard
  • Design and capture KRIs and ensuring remediation as required
  • Lead incident response during a crisis
  • Ensure the Third Party Risk Management team is providing the Bank with an effective TPRM program
  • Ensure the Business Continuity Manager is providing the Bank with an effective BCP program
  • Ensure the Head of Model Governance is providing the Bank with an effective model governance program
  • Ensure the New Product Approval Lead is providing the Bank with an effective NPA program
  • Partner with risk peers in Credit, Information Security, Compliance and BSA to design, maintain and enhance the second line risk management framework
  • Provide effective challenge to the first line regarding risk taking, product design, operational controls, third parties, resiliency, models and fraud management
  • Collaborate with product, operations, engineering, finance, legal, marketing, design and HR to embed a robust risk culture across the organization
  • Assist in the reporting, approval and tracking of items proposed for risk acceptance.

Required skills and experiences

  • Associates or Bachelor Degree
  • 7-10 years of experience in a financial services company working in operational risk management
  • Ability to work collaboratively, engage and communicate with stakeholders across the organization
  • Strong organization and time management skills, specifically working to deadlines with multiple deliverables in a fast-paced environment
  • Passionate about the details and ensuring reports are easy to digest, complete, accurate and meaningful
  • Being scrappy and game for any task, able to adapt and pivot
