We are seeking a Payments Analyst as part of our growing Payments & Risk Analytics team within Gusto’s Payments & Risk Operations Group. This group moves billions of dollars for Gusto customers every year. The successful candidate will work across functions (Payments & Risk Operations, Credit Policy, Product, Engineering, Data Science, Compliance, Security and Finance) and will use data to help drive and achieve Gusto’s long-term vision for the People Platform.

The Payments Analyst will use their knowledge of financial forecasting and operations as well as their data skills to build and maintain KPI metrics, forecast volumes and losses to measure the impact and performance of new and existing product and operational features. In addition will help to create a reporting infrastructure for payments and compliance requirements.
Payments and payment speeds are at the core of Gusto’s business. We currently process tens of billions of payments annually and we need a data analyst on the Fintech team who can help Gusto continue scaling accurately, sustainably, and safely.
Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
- Work with SQL and Excel / Google Sheets to drive data solutions to Operational and Policy problems within the Payments and Risk Operations Group at Gusto
- Support Legal and Compliance initiatives such as Money Transfer Licenses by creating and organizing payments data reporting
- Forecasting and and modeling forward payment volumes, types and loss profiles in the payments product under a changing product experience, customer population and economic time
- Leverage data to understand small business money movement fraud together with Financial and Compliance Risk, proactively identify areas of opportunity and suggest cross functional projects to spearhead payments efficiency and mitigate risk
- Train operations teams to further develop SQL skills and use data tools to perform deep dive analysis to diagnose and resolve payment and credit events
- Maintain SQL repository for daily KPI, troubleshooting and alert monitoring
- Handle external data sources
Here’s what we're looking for:
- 2-4 years of experience in banking and/or fintech
- Knowledge of the attributes of payments and faster payments
- Background in the credit and fraud risk signals of small businesses
- Background in segmentation and cohort analyses
- Advanced SQL and Excel skills to perform data segmentation and aggregation from scratch
- Proven working experience with data analytics and visualization tools (e.g. Excel, Tableau, Redash)
- Experience working with KPI metrics
