The AML Compliance & Investigations Senior Manager will be responsible for managing elements of the day-to-day operations and governance of the AML compliance programs of Coinbase’s U.S. entities. This role falls within the Global AML organization and will report to the BSA Officer.  This role will be broadly responsible supporting Coinbase in its mission to create an open financial system while ensuring that Coinbase remains the most trusted and compliant exchange. This will entail supporting financial crimes compliance initiatives, helping to scale the compliance team through a period of growth, managing elements of the Compliance Investigations function, and working with the BSA Officer on key compliance initiatives including the BSA/AML risk assessment, issue management and remediation, and change management efforts. The role will manage relevant projects within these responsibilities, and work with the BSA Officer to establish and/or influence U.S.-centric priorities, resource planning and allocation to align with quarterly OKRs and Compliance team plans. The AML Compliance & Investigations Senior Manager will work with key stakeholders in the Compliance organization, and will be required to build strong cross-functional relationships with relevant stakeholders in Customer Experience, Security, and Legal, as well as Product, Engineering and Coverage teams. 

To be successful in this role you will need to be quick to learn the cryptocurrency business, have a proactive, enthusiastic and positive attitude, have a strong knowledge of AML compliance and investigations best practices, and be able to work in a fast-paced and innovative environment. The AML  Compliance & Investigations Senior Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the operating effectiveness and sustainability of Coinbase’s BSA/AML Compliance programs in the United States through effective program management and stakeholder coordination as well as the timely escalation of risks and challenges to the BSA Officer and Global Head of AML.  The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail and results-oriented, agile, experienced in anti-money laundering and sanctions compliance at a programmatic level, passionate about cryptocurrency, and have proven experience with AML compliance program development and remediation at sophisticated financial institutions.

What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

  • Establish and enhance BSA/AML systems and controls through a risk based approach, including carrying out regular assessments of the adequacy of systems and controls to ensure effective financial crime risk management
  • Provide subject matter expertise on Compliance Investigations and Transaction Monitoring matters and initiatives 
  • Manage timely closure of issues identified through regulatory examinations, internal and external audits 
  • Participate in execution of the periodic BSA/AML risk assessment process 
  • Develop and implement appropriate risk-based BSA/AML policies and procedures
  • Provide advisory input on matters escalated from cross-functional teams
  • Coordinate with the BSA Officer in quarterly and annual planning processes to ensure effective administration of the Compliance Investigations program
  • Support and advise on Coinbase AML MIS reporting initiatives, including timely reporting, development of key risk and performance metrics, and coordination of relevant stakeholders as necessary to support timely MIS development 
  • Oversee development and enhancement of a Compliance Investigation quality assurance program
  • Manage a team within Compliance Investigations, providing coaching and guidance on career development
  • Partner with BSA Officer and Trust & Risk leadership on ad-hoc initiatives

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):

  • 10-12+ years of relevant experience in AML compliance and investigations program management at or supporting large financial institutions, banks, or fintechs 
  • Proven people management experience leading a diverse team of Program stakeholders
  • Prior experience serving as a liaison for internal and external Auditors
  • Strong compliance instincts and risk mitigation mindset
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and project management expertise
  • Highly organized and adept at managing competing priorities, diverse stakeholder groups, and ambiguity
  • Strong critical thinker and problem solver, with meticulous attention to detail
  • Intellectual curiosity and interest in cryptocurrency
  • Flexibility and the ability to build relationships with cross-functional stakeholders will be imperative to your success in this role

Nice to haves:

  • Investigations or compliance experience in the crypto industry
  • Knowledge of payments industry and familiarity with different payment types
  • Prior tech experience/start-up experience coupled with prior experience in traditional financial services
