Staff Health Economist
Virta is the first company with a clinically-proven treatment to safely and sustainably reverse type-2 diabetes without the use of medications or surgery. As a full stack health care company of physicians, engineers, marketers and more under one roof, Virta collects comprehensive data on our patients’ experience, and leverages this data to build the next generation of health care for chronic diseases. Our Staff Health Economist will drive rigorous financial analysis into the fabric of Virta’s products and decision making, and guide Virta to a deeper understanding of its ROI and value proposition using claims-based analysis. As a member of the Insights & Analytics team, you will be an evidence-based partner to our product and business teams as we scale our operation to reverse type 2 diabetes in millions of people.

Responsibilities
- Own Virta’s savings and ROI methodologies
- Build and iterate on ROI model to show Virta’s value
- Understand, model, and explain key drivers of value for the unique characteristics of enterprise customers, segments (commercial, Medicare, Medicaid), and Virta products
- Develop internal/external content for Commercial team and support training
- Participate in enterprise prospect and customer methodologic discussions, while also building Virta advocates in the actuary circles among consultants and health plans
- Develop and support tools for analysis & assess the need for updates, as appropriate
- Develop consensus regarding Virta’s value proposition for internal and external stakeholders
- Help Virta reach more members and save more lives by demonstrating Virta’s value to our customers
- Explore claims data to understand additional areas that Virta can provide economic and clinical value to patients and customers
- Partner with service delivery team to integrate insights into workflows
- Assist with the analysis of performance guarantees
90 Day Plan
Within your first 90 days at Virta, we expect you will do the following:
- Develop a deep understanding of our current ROI methodologies
- Immerse yourself in the rich, longitudinal data we collect on our patients
- Assist with claims-based performance guarantee analysis and risk-based contracts
- Teach and inspire other Insights & Analytics as well as Commercial team members through knowledge sharing
- Participate in methodologic discussions with enterprise customers and consultants
- Build out a roadmap for iterating on Virta’s Value proposition, in partnership with leadership and commercial, research, & product teams
Must-Haves
- You have 5+ years experience applying actuarial principles or health economics to claims-based analysis to estimate the financial impact of an intervention
- You are curious about how our innovative care model impacts health economics and want to explore data to be able to share our impact
- You have superb verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by 2+ years experience collaborating with executives, peers, and external stakeholders, as well as proficiency in Excel and at least one statistical programming language or package (e.g. Python)
- You have deep experience with at least one of the following: commercial insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid, and a strong understanding of medical claims data and pharmacy claims data
- Proficiency in advanced actuarial and analytic methodologies, including an understanding of various retrospective and prospective approaches towards measuring or estimating financial effectiveness, such as trend analysis, difference-in-differences, matched pairs, regression analysis, simulation studies, and risk-score normalization. Proficiency in Excel and a preference for experience with at least one statistical programming language or package (e.g. Python)
- Preferred: You also have experience with critically reviewing the methodology of healthcare interventions performed by others, through experience in academia, a consultancy, or a carrier

As part of your duties at Virta, you may come in contact with sensitive patient information that is governed by HIPAA. Throughout your career at Virta, you will be expected to follow Virta's security and privacy procedures to ensure our patients' information remains strictly confidential. Security and privacy training will be provided.

Note: Starting pay will be based on a number of factors and commensurate with qualifications & experience. Virta has a location based compensation structure; there may be a different range for candidates in other locations.
