About the Platform and Security Engineering Team

Varo’s Platform Engineering team’s mission is to improve service reliability, developer productivity, and infrastructure efficiency. We are an automation-focused team who would rather be writing Lambdas or Terraform than tunneling into a Linux instance to see how it's feeling. In a typical day members of our team are hands on with everything from observability tools and CI/CD pipelines, to our production infrastructure. We collectively strive to build and maintain a rapid-feedback platform that enables our engineers to accomplish their own goals instead of creating friction.

Varo’s Security Engineering team’s mission is to help the organization conduct business in a secure manner without hindering developer agility or product innovation. The team works hand-in-hand with engineers across the organization as we innovate in the banking industry. We practice the “DevSecOps” philosophy and build security automation early into the process of everyday engineering functions from software engineering, to cloud infrastructure, and IT.

About the Platform and Security Engineering Intern Role

We’re looking for someone with an interest in software engineering, cloud infrastructure, modern distributed systems, and with a security-first mindset. 

Specifically, this role will be focused on supporting the wider engineering organization to achieve Varo’s collective mission. You will participate in the full engineering lifecycle of designing, developing, deploying, and optimizing of software, infrastructure, and security. This is a great opportunity to get real, hands-on experience with the tools, systems, and processes of a modern engineering organization.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Work with open source software every day.
• Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Gitlab and Helm.
• Build Grafana and/or Kibana dashboards from data sources such as ElasticSearch, Prometheus, Cloudwatch, and Cloudflare.
• Participate in on-call rotation, monitor, and respond to production incidents. (don’t worry, you’ll shadow an experienced on-call engineer)
• Integrate software security scanning tools into our CI/CD pipelines.
• Build AWS infrastructure using Terraform.
• Participate in Threat Modeling exercises to assess the risks of new and/or existing services.
• Code internal tools that help developers be more productive.

Nobody can be great at everything, but we’re looking for candidates who are:

• Familiar with at least one mobile, server, or web language. (Java/Kotlin, Swift, Python, Go, Javascript)
• Familiar with at least one Linux-based server operating system. 
• Familiar with basic concepts of networking, databases, and/or information security. 

OTHER NICE TO HAVES

• Experience with Kubernetes and Public Cloud (AWS/GCP/Azure)
