About Zipline

Do you want to change the world? Zipline uses drones to deliver critical and life-saving medicine to thousands of hospitals serving millions of people in multiple countries. Our mission is to provide every human on Earth with instant access to vital medical supplies. Join Zipline and help us make this a reality for billions of people.

About You and The Role

Note: This is a paid opportunity.

As a Software Engineering Intern on the Hardware Test team at Zipline you will have the unique opportunity to develop and deploy high quality software that will power our automated testers for all our next-generation systems. Through developing these tests you will gain a deep understanding of our full avionics stack and the embedded code that lives in them, including flight computers, power distribution boards, battery management systems, and motor controllers. Software Test engineers at Zipline contribute beyond their field--reviewing schematics, building hardware, simple CAD, and really as far as you want to explore. Most importantly, all of this work you will take on will be the last line of defence before our vehicles are shipped all over the world to perform vital, life-saving deliveries.

What You'll Do

  • Architect, develop and deploy test software that will be used to validate components from avionics boards to integrated drones
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to take an entire hardware tester from design concept to production manufacturing line
  • Develop automation-centric software scripts to streamline design and production testing
  • Develop a deep understanding of components under test, becoming a subject matter expert in the device behavior under a range of environmental and system conditions
  • Triage and root-cause field failures, using data analysis, test heritage, correlation to operating conditions, and one-off test campaigns

Examples of previous projects include:

  • Working with our powertrain engineering team to develop new tester hardware and software drivers for our new motor controllers
  • Writing embedded software test code for communication (RS485, CAN, WiFi...), power telemetry, and other peripherals to validate PCBAs for production
  • Developing calibration fixtures and software algorithms for our flight sensors (airflow, imu, perception…)

What You'll Bring

  • Experience programming in Python for production applications, and some knowledge of embedded C
  • Experience working with Git / CI and the software development process
  • Experience developing software that interfaces directly with hardware, including navigating datasheets and validating hands-on with hardware
  • Experience  validating new hardware and understanding potential failure modes
  • Experience using common test instrumentation (e.g. multimeter, oscilloscope, daq) and sensors (e.g. IMU, lidar, encoder)
  • Experience solving complex multidisciplinary problems with little supervision on schedule as an individual or as a member of an integrated team

Internship Timing

Zipline is looking for software engineering interns throughout 2022. The minimum internship duration is 12 weeks. Longer internships/co-ops are encouraged but not required. It is common for interns on our team to complete an internship of 4-8 months. A longer tenure multiplies impact, you’ll learn a ton in the first month or two and be able to tackle projects of significant complexity and impact as your internship continues.
