Firefly is seeking an Associate General Counsel to help build and scale its legal team and provide sound, practical and actionable legal advice to business partners on domestic and global matters.

This position will report to the General Counsel and will be an instrumental member of the legal team. This role includes work in the traditional in-house portfolio (negotiating contracts and other agreements, supporting all departments and functions with legal review and advice, managing risk and disputes), as well as on broader strategic issues and issues of first impression. It requires a broad understanding of corporate, commercial, intellectual property, privacy, transactional, compliance, employment, and litigation matters. This position will work closely with leaders of other departments to achieve business objectives, mitigate risks, and meet legal obligations.

This is an ideal role for an in-house generalist with strong leadership skills to partner with the General Counsel to optimize the legal function in an innovative and fast-growing company. This position is based in San Francisco and will require some domestic travel.

Responsibilities

• Provide timely, business-focused advice to all departments, including Operations, Product, Sales, Analytics, Finance, and HR to achieve business objectives, mitigate risks, and meet legal obligations
• Help develop legal strategy aligned with core business initiatives and advise company leadership on legal considerations around strategic business decisions
• Review, negotiate and advise on a wide range of commercial agreements, and optimize the company’s standard forms
• Develop an IP program and protection strategy and advise on global IP issues
• Advise on data and privacy issues
• Advise on and provide legal support in fundraising scenarios and for transactions
• Manage outside counsel’s delivery of legal services
• Oversee the company’s contract management system and improve internal legal processes
• Manage special projects as required to support the business

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited institution and member of the California bar in good standing
• 8+ years practicing law, including experience at a top-tier law firm and 3+ years in-house
• High-caliber, solution-oriented attorney who is business-minded with practical risk awareness
• Strategic and results-driven, proactive and resourceful
• Self-starter who is at home in a fast-paced, high-growth and informal start-up environment where demands and priorities can change rapidly
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, capable of working both in teams and independently
• Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities simultaneously
• Comfortable rolling up your sleeves and being hands-on
• Proven ability to develop collaborative relationships with internal partners
• Growth mindset and a sense of humor
