About the Role:

Planet is seeking a new Corporate Counsel to join our expanding Legal Team! The Corporate Counsel will have a distinct focus on product counseling and commercial transactions. The position can be remote and will report to and work under the general direction of the Deputy General Counsel, located in San Francisco. 

The Corporate Counsel will be responsible for a wide variety of legal tasks as set forth below. The ideal candidate will exhibit the highest professional standards and ethical principles as well as exceptional communication skills. Responsibilities:

Commercial:

  • Review, draft, and negotiate a variety of agreements with our partners, clients, and vendors, which range from government agencies, universities, and multinational corporations to startups and nonprofits. 
  • Be a key resource and point of contact within our legal team to assist with a variety of commercial needs, while working integrally within the broader legal and compliance teams to ensure that the assistance provided is thorough, consistent, and in line with Planet’s strategies and values.
  • Work closely and effectively with cross-functional teams including Sales, SalesOps, Business Development, Marketing, Human Resources, and Finance.

Product Focus:

  • Partner with Product teams to understand product, engineering, design, and operational implications of existing and new products and initiatives. 
  • Conduct legal product reviews and advise multiple stakeholders across product, engineering, marketing, and business development throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Regularly meet with internal teams to understand strategies, roadmaps, and initiatives, and advise on new features, activities, markets, etc., to ensure alignment.
  • Provide legal guidance on the design and modification of products, proactively identify associated risks and recommend mitigation strategies, review product user experiences to ensure legal compliance and proper disclosures and help document guidance for consumption by members of both the legal and product teams.
  • Draft clear and concise public facing disclosures, disclaimers, terms of use, and other public facing documents for our users.
  • Understand and stay up to date on U.S. and international laws and regulations related to Planet’s products and services.

General:

  • Refine documents and forms, develop templates to address new relationships and complex partnerships, and streamline the day-to-day commercial processes to increase efficiency as Planet continues to grow.
  • Provide strategic business and legal advice to develop a comprehensive, long-term approach to our relationships with key clients, partners, and vendors.

Experience:

  • Qualified attorney licensed to practice law in at least one US state.
  • 6+ years of experience - in-house experience required; product counsel experience required; some law firm experience preferred.
  • Experience with technology licensing, SaaS/Data as a Service, developer tools, integrations, or related products or features preferred, along with some of the legal issues – such as privacy and data protection, content regulation, intellectual property, marketing, and consumer protection – and a willingness to learn about the rest along with entirely new areas of law.
  • Experience addressing the legal needs of the technology sector, particularly with SaaS contracts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, attention to detail, problem solving skills, and decision-making skills.
  • Detailed understanding of a variety of commercial agreements, including hands-on experience in reviewing, negotiating, and drafting.
  • International experience required.
  • Past experience working with government or public agencies in a commercial setting is a plus.

  • Demonstrated capability to understand complex issues and to provide timely and practical advice, which addresses both the legal concerns and the overall business benefits and risks.
  • Ability to maintain a graceful and helpful customer service attitude, particularly in high-pressure and time-crunched circumstances, where last-minute circumstances may shift project priorities.
  • Established efficiency by use of meticulous organizational skills, including the ability to manage a variety of projects and ongoing negotiations at once. 
  • Capable independent worker, quick learner, and self-starter, who is driven and creative, yet who is a team player who brings a positive and supportive mentality to Planet. 
  • Good sense of humor, outgoing, drama-free, inquisitive, and desire to get things done.
