Discord is looking for an experienced General Counsel to build out a legal and policy team. You will guide us through complex legal projects and matters involving Privacy, Product, Compliance, and Policy. You’ll need to be strong willed but flexible to adapt to our changing priorities and organizational needs. To start with, you’ll be rolling up your sleeves to jump in and support the overall organization, but we’ll look to you both to build a team and train the company on the intricacies of law and business. Your advice and creativity will help shape the legal, product, and policy strategies for our crazy fast-growing business.What You Will Do
- Build processes and a team to improve our legal efficiency, mitigate risk, and help us use Discord as a force for good
- Navigate a complex landscape to develop compliance and policy structure and processes relating to privacy, security, product, and user safety
- Provide legal support to help us design a next-generation social media and communication platform
- Provide contracting support and advice on matters relating to financial services offerings
- Review and draft legal agreements and facilitate all legal needs and conversations across the company (HR, Product, Corporate, and Contract)
What You Have
- J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school and membership in CA state bar
- 15+ years experience as a practicing attorney
- You’re excited to work and partner with the leaders of other departments and have a proven ability to reach agreement on complex issues.
- Experience and expertise in consumer privacy law (GDPR, CCPA, etc)
- Experience working with consumer-focused Internet, Communication and technology companies, preferably startups at the Series D+ stages
- Experience working in-house at a growing startup and providing direction and leadership under tight deadlines
- Experience building a high functioning team that has contributed to the growth and scaling of a business
