As the founding member of our Legal team, you will build and lead our legal team, develop and execute our legal strategy and counsel cross functional teams (including product, engineering, partnerships, finance, people ops, and trust & safety). You will collaborate with senior leadership and outside counsel to build and refine the legal frameworks and policies to ensure Quizlet’s continued success as we scale. This will include US and International compliance, financings, contracts, intellectual property, and general corporate matters.

What you will be doing:

  • Oversee all legal and compliance affairs for Quizlet’s various lines of business and advise the executive team and management at all levels of the organization accordingly
  • Create and execute a strategy of leveraging external counsel and managing engagements
  • Draft and refine form commercial agreements and coordinate the execution / negotiation of agreements with vendors, partners and contractors
  • Formulate, implement and manage internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all corporate and regulatory obligations
  • Partner with Quizlet’s Head of Trust & Safety on issues relating to consumer protection, privacy, data, and other compliance
  • Anticipate and identify legal risks globally, stay abreast of various regulatory developments, and use critical thinking to provide proactive and strategic solutions to eliminate or mitigate those risks
  • Research unique legal issues impacting the organization including those specific to subscriptions, ads and payments

What would set you up for success

  • JD from a top-tier law school and active membership with good standing in at least one state bar required
  • Minimum 5 years of legal practice experience in general corporate transactional matters, with at least 3 years of experience at a top national law firm
  • Prior in-house experience in a technology company preferred (ideally exposure to hyper growth company environments)
  • Experience with consumer internet, SaaS, data protection and privacy regulations (including CCPA, COPPA, and GDPR), contracts management systems, and commercial transactions
  • Enthusiasm, strong work ethic and roll-up-your-sleeves approach
  • Intellectual curiosity; willingness and ability to quickly learn and apply key principles from new legal practice areas
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing and innovative environment to come up with creative solutions that meet the needs of various stakeholders
  • Effective business partner; solution-oriented; out-of-the-box thinker
  • Ability to apply legal insights, training and research to address a range of business matters
  • Expertise in managing outside counsel relationships in legal focal areas
