The role

We are looking for a passionate and motivated attorney to join our fast-growing legal team. We work on complex and cutting-edge legal problems and innovate alongside our product and business teams to build outstanding solutions that empower the next gen. We don’t believe in silos and intend for this to be a broad and high-growth role, with only your intellectual interests and curiosity setting the limits for what you can do and own. 

At a high level, you will have a broad range of responsibilities providing legal guidance to our product, compliance, growth, and partnership teams. Your counsel will help shape product development and principled decision-making across the business. Your guidance will cut across many areas of legal and regulatory compliance, including financial regulations, privacy, data security, consumer protection, contracts, and intellectual property. Additionally, if you have the interest, you can take on opportunities to support and grow your experience in other legal domains such as M&A, litigation, employment, and corporate work.  

What you’ll do

• Navigate a complex legal and regulatory landscape to help design innovative financial products and services.
• Develop strategy with applicable laws and regulations relating to privacy, security, consumer protection (UDAP, UDAAP), and financial services.
• Proactively review products, features, designs, and business initiatives to provide practical and principled risk mitigation advice and improve company’s operating efficiency. 
• Draft, negotiate, advise, and be the source of truth on all commercial and partnership agreements. Build and maintain processes for lifecycle management of Step’s contracts.  
• Keep current on and advise on pending and developing applicable law and regulations, especially as it relates to financial regulations (lending, banking, securities, crypto, credit cards), consumer protection, content regulation, social media law, influencer/advertising law, privacy and data protection.
• Create training materials, scalable processes, and playbooks and self-help guides for the product and business teams.

What we’re looking for

• 6+ years experience as an attorney, preferably with substantial in-house experience (product/commercial counseling at a technology company is a plus). 
• Excellent commercial negotiation and drafting skills.
• Experience in financial technology risk, financial services (lending, credit cards, banking, etc.), and a working understanding of financial regulations and rules is a strong plus. 
• Proficiency in driving privacy by design and working understanding of domestic and international privacy and data protection regulations (CCPA, GLBA, FCRA, etc.). 
• Experience working in a fast-paced environment and fluency translating legal advice into actionable guidance for product and business teams. 
• Excitement to learn new technologies and areas of law. 
• J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
