Job Description

As Wish’s Senior Counsel for Payments, you will serve as our payments expert, bringing deep expertise in global payments and applying it to an e-commerce marketplace. In this role, you will support all things payments-related by providing timely, concise, and business-focused legal advice on payments and banking laws. You will need working knowledge of regulatory compliance and be able to issue spot and advise in the areas of money transmission, card processing, stored value, lending, transaction monitoring, restricted party screening, and KYC/CDD. This role will report to Wish’s Chief Compliance Officer and will also work closely with Wish’s Associate General Counsel for Product & Privacy. 

What You’ll Do

  • Advise on legal, regulatory, and industry requirements and best practices for payments and related financial services activities
  • Provide ideas, solutions, and insights on compliant new payments offerings that create meaningful value for our users and merchants
  • Project manage new payments license applications and ensure continued compliance for existing payments licenses
  • Structure, draft, negotiate, and review agreements with various financial institutions and partners, including PSPs
  • Identify risk areas and develop systems and procedures to manage and reduce risk
  • Manage and respond to any inquiries from regulatory authorities
  • Stay up to date on and analyze impact of new, pending, and upcoming regulations that will impact our payments compliance program and product offerings
  • Ensure our AML/CTF and sanctions policies and processes reflect evolving regulatory requirements
  • Work with internal stakeholders to develop, implement, and fine tune KYC processes 
  • Partner with operational teams to identify and implement any new controls/processes to comply with regulatory changes
  • Work with outside counsel and external consultants in various countries

Qualifications

  • J.D. degree and a state bar member in good standing
  • 6+ years of combined law firm, government, and/or in-house experience
  • Extensive knowledge of financial services and payments compliance requirements and regulations, including anti-money laundering, sanctions regulations, and know-your-customer requirements
  • Familiarity with and a strong interest in mobile and alternative payments, emerging payments technology, and the payments industry 
  • Understanding of payments institution regulations (EU) and stored value/e-money 
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to electronic payments, e-commerce, platforms/marketplaces, and consumer financial services
  • Prior experience with payments license application(s) and related implementations
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements 
  • Sound and practical business judgment, intellectual creativity, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with internal partners (including senior company executives) and external stakeholders
  • Ability to learn quickly and support new areas of regulation and technology
  • Strong work ethic and collaboration skills 
  • The ability to dig into and take ownership of complex legal issues
  • Experience working in an international team a plus
  • Project management experience a plus
