We’re looking for a dynamic lawyer to join us as we build the legal affairs function, almost from scratch, and simultaneously deliver legal services in one of today’s most exciting industries: sustainable home and personal goods. You have an entrepreneurial mindset that successfully enables you to work independently, minimize surprises, and escalate issues when appropriate. You are a legal generalist excited by working across traditional practice areas, with a focus on regulatory work within the consumer goods industry. You are a manager of systems who can execute legal operations projects, and a leader who can collaborate across teams to improve processes with legal touchpoints.

We are a small team responsible for all of Grove’s legal matters which means that you must be extremely flexible and enjoy a “high-change” environment where priorities shift rapidly. Your product regulatory experience is the special skill that you will bring to the team, but a typical day may include implementing a contract management solution, negotiating strategic partnerships, reviewing leases, supporting the human relations team, developing outside counsel guidelines, helping with a non-disclosure agreement, and creating scalable processes for legal review of new product launches. You will advise on issues related to consumer protection, privacy, and data protection. You are a master at context-switching from conducting a complex negotiation or solving a deep legal problem to loading a document into DocuSign.

Your Role & Impact

  • Support our regulatory success by bringing legal and regulatory expertise to inform Grove’s regulatory priorities; assist with claims substantiation, and claims review from inception to post-launch. Regulatory experience with FDA, USDA, FTC required.
  • Commercial transactions and corporate matters, including counseling, drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, corporate governance, employee training, and business risk and process management.
  • Thought-partnership with general counsel to find new ideas and strategies to deliver legal services in the most efficient manner possible.
  • Work with business teams to create corporate policies, forms, and procedures
  • Special projects on an “as needed” basis to provide general support to the business at large.
  • Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee of this job. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

About You

  • 10 years of relevant legal experience, although more experience is welcome, with at least 3 years either in-house or advising on consumer goods laws and regulations.
  • Excellent lawyer, who relishes dotting the Is and crossing the Ts.
  • Strong negotiation, consultative and facilitation skills with the ability to effectively interact with all internal and external stakeholders on complex matters.
  • Strong ability to influence, provide points of views, and to listen.
  • An effective teacher, willing to engage, educate and train business colleagues about legal matters.
  • Track record identifying and using the most efficient and effective legal resources to complete the work in a timely and cost effective manner.
  • Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active member of the California State Bar, in good standing; or eligible to register under the California State Bar.
  • Commitment to inclusion and diversity.
  • Some travel may be required.
