About the Role:  

Planet is seeking a creative data journalist or analyst with project management experience. This person will lead Planet’s news team and be charged with placing Planet’s imagery and data in earned media stories that support our corporate objectives and revenue goals. This person will coordinate with teams of data visualizers and lead programs designed to showcase a wide range of applications of our data and products. 

This role will sit on the communications team within marketing and lead the discovery, verification, and processing of satellite imagery for use by global news outlets like the New York Times, and Reuters, as well as by think tanks like MIIS, Stimson, and CSIS. You’ll work daily with journalists from all over the world to enable their reporting with Planet’s satellite data and tools. You’ll develop relationships with think tanks and analysts and lead program development to educate media and analyst users. If you love geography, geopolitics, breaking news, are technically inclined, and can spend hours looking at Google Maps of your upcoming vacation destination, then you should apply.

What You Bring:

  • 3+ years experience working in a newsroom or as an analyst, with a history of working with journalists and graphics teams at news organizations
  • Track record of creativity in developing and pitching stories to decision makers in the media
  • Comfortable with new multi-media technologies, with a keen understanding of what works across platforms and media companies
  • Proven history of handling multiple competing deadlines and solving problems
  • Proficiency with Photoshop, particularly in image processing and color grading
  • Experience coordinating with teams and a history of working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Passion for news and geopolitical subjects
  • Mission driven with a bias towards telling the truth with facts 
  • A learn-by-doing type with an attitude towards rolling up your sleeves and executing
  • Curious with an eye for news, compelling stories, and creative approaches to visualize complex subjects

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Proficiency in other Adobe Creative Cloud products (AfterEffects, Premiere, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting satellite imagery
  • GIS and Cartographic Skills
