About Us

The Athletic is a direct-to-consumer digital sports media company committed to helping subscribers experience storytelling in a whole new way. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in San Francisco, The Athletic has more than 575 full-time employees and covers more than 250 professional sports and collegiate teams in the US, Canada and the UK. The Athletic’s newsroom has produced thousands of in-depth articles along with more than 120 podcasts and premium video content.

About the Role

The Athletic is looking to add a senior B2C performance marketer to drive and scale our multi-channel paid acquisition initiatives. You will be responsible for driving subscriptions at an acceptable CAC and LTV. The position requires the ability to continuously test and learn to help grow and scale the business. In order to guide you in hitting aggressive metrics, you will have access to budgets for both testing and scaling, multiple agency partners to aid in execution and analysis, and an internal team of top-notch creatives, developers, and designers.

We are looking for a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can roll up their sleeves to build, deploy and launch campaigns across a variety of platforms. The ideal candidate must have experience in executing campaigns via multiple digital channels. Offline channel experience is a plus.

Native mobile is a big portion of how subscribers engage with our content. A strong understanding of subscription based models and experience growing and converting subscribers for mobile apps would be advantageous in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategy, test plans and media execution to achieve customer acquisition, conversion, and LTV targets
  • Responsible for spend, efficiency and subscriber KPIs for paid search, display, video and offline
  • Own and define channel optimization and test roadmaps, including: creative testing, audience segmentation, placements and retargeting to maximize-full funnel performance
  • Drive requirements with Product (e.g. feature / A/B tests), Analytics (e.g. experiments / insights), and Creatives (e.g. concept brainstorming) to improve performance marketing scale and efficiency
  • Build out reporting and forecasting for channels to communicate with leadership as well as the cross-functional growth team
  • Work with complex datasets to understand performance, improve campaigns, drive decision making and measure outcomes
  • Foster strong relationships with paid media agencies and technology partners

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of successfully managing large paid acquisition budgets for a popular and scaling B2C product. Bonus points for mobile products and subscription products.
  • Experience developing a performance marketing strategy and overseeing a multi-channel approach at the local and national levels
  • Strong understanding of current paid media channels and industry trends
  • Extremely analytical. This is not a “content’ role -- you need to speak to decisions and learnings with data
  • Experience building test-and-learn plans
  • Understanding of the subscription revenue model in the digital media space
  • Candidate must work in our San Francisco office
