The Chief of Staff (CoS) to the CEO role requires exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and analytical talent, and ability to influence by through respect and trust. The CoS will work closely with Grove's Founder & CEO, often as his proxy, with internal and external stakeholders including other executives, team members, investors, and external partners. This position is a combination of "internal strategy consultant" working on special projects, operations expert, and business development executive helping the CEO execute against mission critical initiatives -- sometimes requiring interfacing with Board members and sometimes helping with execution on important tactical projects. You will have first hand exposure to the flow of the business' executive management and decision making, and will have to prioritize and balance while building a reputation for reliability and partnership across the company.

The CoS role is an exceptional way to see how a growth-stage company is built and scaled and have a real measurable impact on Grove’s success. Your success in this role prepares you well to eventually become a COO, CEO or GM in a startup or to take a functional leadership role in at Grove or in a growth company. The expectation is that this is a 2-3 year position, and the CEO is committed to ensuring you transition successfully into a strong next leadership role.

Key responsibilities

  • Strategic thinking + analysis -- you will drive the analysis in partnership with the CEO that drive many of the large strategic decisions in the company
  • Communication -- you will assist the CEO on internal and external communications with stakeholders ranging the various groups across Grove's roughly 1,500 team members (from software engineers to hourly fulfillment center works to scientists) and external stakeholders
  • Organization + thinking ahead -- you will help the CEO see around the corner and provide leverage to make sure that they most important topics get prioritized
  • CEO extension -- you will provide leverage to the CEO, including sitting in with and for him in meetings and work sessions, helping to drive the the follow up analysis and ensuring that key deliverables are completed well and on time
  • Project Execution -- From cultural touch points to new business line testing to supporting priority existing business needs, you will lead execution on special projects in places that the CEO believes are extremely high leverage for the business
  • Board + stakeholder management -- You will help the CEO interface with the Board and with the 11 institutional investor partners who regularly communicate with the company, building close relationships and trust with your counterparts at the investment firms
  • Strong Judgement -- The CoS role becomes a real stakeholder in many key dialogues, so judgment and intuition around both business and "human" dynamics are key to driving success

Background

  • 2-5 years of experience in an analytical role in consulting, private equity, corporate strategy, or investment banking
  • Some experience beyond that analytical role (e.g. product management, MBA, startup role) is a plus, but not required
  • Undergraduate degree from a top school is required
  •  Interpersonal skills to work with anyone, and persuade others to work with you even without a formal reporting relationship
  • Crisp written and verbal communicator with the ability to take complex, ambiguous concepts and distill them into understandable narrative
  • C-level presence and confidence to be able to meet with internal and external partners at the most senior level
  • Strong project management skills to be able to drive multiple projects forward towards closure and impact
  • Optimistic attitude; as most of your projects are unexpected and tough new challenges and opportunities, you must bring optimism and excitement to people you’re working with
  • Strong interest in consumer + growth stage businesses, and passion for making an impact through the work we do each day
  • Strong orientation to team culture and cross-functionality
  • Capacity to become a senior leader at Grove following the Chief of Staff role
