Engineering Manager, Firmware Test Automation - MV
Meraki’s camera team is a growing, forward-thinking group building security cameras for the future. Our product blends the elegance and ease of use of high-end consumer systems with the immense scalability, security, and power of enterprise-grade solutions.
As the head of the Firmware Test Automation Team, you will lead our efforts to deliver an outstanding experience for the users who depend on our product every day for safety, security, and business intelligence.
Testing security cameras presents a unique set of challenges; our devices interact heavily with the physical world, encountering a wide variety of conditions across the globe.
Alongside your own small team of 3-4 creative and hardworking test engineers, fully embedded within the software organization, you'll partner closely with our platform, hardware, and product management teams to rise to these challenges. Your team will work on upcoming and current devices, crafting imaginative automated simulations of the real-world environments and scenarios in which they are deployed.
You will also be growing the team, retaining talent, providing technical direction and career development opportunities, and nurturing the team's core values of quality, teamwork, and inclusiveness.
About the role
The MV Test Automation Team is responsible for ensuring the security and stability of a system that captures and records video, manages network connectivity, and enables advanced computer vision analytics, all seamlessly managed remotely via the cloud. Our test automation engineers help our firmware teams deliver and continuously improve this platform with high quality and confidence.
In this role, you will:
- Plan and track test development timelines, updating the rest of the team when things change
- Play a key role in the software release process for the broader team: moving release candidate builds through different stages of validation (internal testing, beta, etc.), acting as a gatekeeper of quality at each stage
- Architect changes to our testbed topology to support testing of a broader range of product features and an accurate reflection of customer deployments
- Select and follow appropriate agile and other software development principles so your team consistently delivers high quality, stable, and useable test frameworks
- Write performance evaluations and encourage the professional growth of everyone on your team
- Identify gaps in your team’s knowledge or ability to execute, and work with our recruiters to build out your team
- Be a part of the leadership of the larger MV team: weighing in on development priorities, projects going on across the team, etc.
You are ideal for this role if you have:
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
- 2+ years of experience managing and leading teams of software engineers
- 2+ years of software test and/or QA experience
- 4+ years of software development experience
- Strong understanding of software development testing frameworks and best practices
- Experience configuring and debugging networking equipment or protocols
- Experience automating or scripting tests or other systems in languages such as Python or Ruby
- Leadership experience on projects involving substantial planning and coordination (either in a formal role or de facto)
- Expert knowledge of end-to-end testing of physical embedded devices
Bonus points for:
- Knowledge of camera and video technologies (h.264, DSPs, computer vision, system resource protection)
- Knowledge of wireless protocols (e.g., 802.11, Bluetooth)
- Experience with wired networking (LAN and WAN) and TCP/IP suite of protocol
