We are on a mission to make car buying and selling fun, fair, and accessible to everyone. We’ve set out to disrupt an $800B+ industry, using technology to bring transparency and convenience into the e-commerce business of buying and selling used cars.

And we aren’t stopping there. Long-term, we seek to bring that same openness and simplicity to car ownership too, with payments, maintenance, and insurance in one technology offering. At Shift, we’re building the tools that empower people to buy, own, and sell the cars that make life go.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Product Manager to own our self-service checkout experience for our buyers. Drawing on a deep understanding of our customers, e-commerce best practices, and qualitative and quantitative insights, you will define the vision and drive the roadmap for our core buyer experience. Your mission is to help buyers complete their car purchase, whether a test drive purchase or a delivery purchase. Your team’s North Star is to drive Sales volume through self-service, and reduce the dependency on our Central Teams for customers to complete their car buying journey.

You’ll be responsible for features such as the checkout experience, consumer self-service dashboard, appointment/order management, payments, and more. Your key partners will be our financing and insurance teams, along with our shopping team. Your team will also drive multi-channel communication to customers along their buying journey, and you will partner with operations teams to complete a successful in-person appointment/delivery. All of these experiences contribute to our North Star mission of making a great online car buying experience that is fair and accessible to everyone.

You will be responsible for driving volume, growth, and conversions for how customers buy their car. You will be constantly optimizing for funnel conversion rates with your Engineering+Design team, while partnering cross-functionally with Sales and Operations to make the right trade-offs for your business area. Longer term, you will also help define our customer retention strategy and engagement opportunities to drive lifetime customer value for buyers. We are a fast-growing product team, where each PM has large scope, is highly entrepreneurial, and delivers value that has direct impact to our customers, business, and profitability.

What you'll do:

  • Define the vision and build the roadmap for the Buyer Purchase Experience across product, engineering, design, and the rest of the business
  • Identify product opportunities to drive conversions in the buyer purchase funnel
  • Build self-service and automated solutions for customers to buy their car with Shift
  • Partner closely with marketing to improve our communication to customers along their journey, including transactional emails, mid-funnel marketing emails, and mobile delivery channels
  • Partner with sales and operations to find ways to automate for customers and improve mid-funnel conversions
  • Work with design and engineering teams to run constant A/B experiments on web and mobile
  • Contribute to process and structural improvements in our product team, along with driving high visibility initiatives that directly contribute to our company profitability
  • Run customer surveys to measure customer sentiment and satisfaction, while identifying opportunities to improve these metrics in the buyer journey
  • Determine customer retention opportunities to help drive lifetime customer value for Shift

What we ask for:

  • 5-7 years of product management experience working on consumer-facing products at scale
  • Strong experience working with software engineers, designers, and analysts to define and execute a product roadmap
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and proven ability to drive the agenda, even where product is one of many considerations
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity, and able to adapt quickly to changing priorities
  • Strong ownership and an entrepreneurial mindset with a go-getter attitude
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with multiple departments and senior leadership
  • Experience in A/B testing and defining success metrics that are outcome-driven
  • Customer obsession, bias for action, and the ability to adapt quickly
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent experience

Nice to have:

  • Experience working in e-commerce or in the auto industry
  • Ex-founder or demonstrated self-initiative in building products
  • Strong background in qualitative and quantitative user research and testing
  • Experience working closely with marketing or sales teams
  • Experience driving “build vs buy” decisions, and implemented both
  • MS in a technical discipline, MBA, or equivalent post-graduate degree

On diversity

Our company depends on balance and equality — between buyers and sellers, among employees, and in our relationships with customers.

Our mission to evolve car ownership and transform an industry is a challenging one. It can only be achieved by a team of diverse problem-solvers — engineers, designers, business people — from the same broad demographics as our customers.

Why apply?

At Shift, we’re all about growth - which means people who are eager to grow, who are ready to roll up their sleeves and learn new things. We were founded by a scrappy group of visionaries who were by no means “car experts” - so we don’t expect you to be one, either! We’ll take the open-minded go-getter over the pure subject matter expert any day. In that spirit, we also care about building a diverse and inclusive workplace and company. To put it simply, cars are meant for everyone, so we believe our company should be, too. We never discriminate against any candidate on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, religion, color, national origin, marital status, veteran status or disability status. We welcome and encourage people of all backgrounds and walks of life to apply, even if you’re unsure if you meet all the requirements. (Even if this particular role isn’t the right fit, chances are we will have the right one soon!)

Why join now?

Having gone public in October 2020, we are at the beginning of our journey and hope you join us for the ride! Shift is a leading end-to-end auto e-commerce platform transforming the used car industry with a technology-driven, hassle-free customer experience. Shift’s mission is to make buying or selling a used car fun, fair, and accessible to everyone. We provide comprehensive, digital solutions throughout the car ownership lifecycle: finding the right car, having a test drive brought to you before buying the car, a seamless digitally-driven purchase transaction including financing and vehicle protection products, an efficient, digital trade-in/sale transaction, and a vision to provide high-value support services during car ownership.
