The Systems Engineering Intern will design tools integrating mechanical, electrical, and software components, ensuring system-level validation and documentation while gaining hands-on experience in robotics.
About Dexterity
At Dexterity, we believe robots can positively transform the world. Our breakthrough technology frees people to do the creative, inspiring, problem-solving jobs that humans do best by enabling robots to handle repetitive and physically difficult work. We’re starting with warehouse automation, where the need for smarter, more resilient supply chains impacts millions of lives and businesses around the world.
Dexterity's full-stack robotics systems pick, move, pack, and collaborate with human-like skill, awareness, and learning capabilities. Our systems are software-driven, hardware-agnostic, and have already picked over 15 million goods in production. And did we mention we’re customer-obsessed?
Every decision, large and small, is driven by one question – how can we empower our customers with robots to do more than they thought was possible?Dexterity is one of the fastest growing companies in robotics, backed by world-class investors such as Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Obvious Ventures.
We’re a diverse and multidisciplinary team with a culture built on passion, trust, and dedication. Come join Dexterity and help make intelligent robots a reality!
About the Role
As a Systems Engineering Intern, you will engage in multidisciplinary work spanning mechanical design, software, and electronics. This role provides hands-on experience with CAD modeling, basic programming, circuit integration, and system-level validation within a fast-paced robotics development environment. You will support the translation of product and engineering requirements into functional, testable subsystems, gaining exposure to the full product lifecycle, from early prototyping through to deployment. The ideal candidate is self-driven, curious, and enthusiastic about learning across domains and contributing to real-world engineering challenges.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop a robust tool involving mechanical, electrical, and software components, taking full ownership from concept to prototype
- Maintain comprehensive technical documentation including BOMs, wiring diagrams, test plans, and validation reports to facilitate reproducibility and compliance
- Help clean up and organize engineering requirements within Jira, ensuring clear traceability between product specifications, system requirements, and validation tests
- Define and document new system requirements based on evolving product needs, ensuring alignment with engineering feasibility and test coverage
- Support additional Verification & Validation (V&V) activities, including the creation of test plans and test cases in TestRail, as well as executing and documenting test results
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline
- Proficient in at least one CAD software package (e.g., NX, SolidWorks)
- Experience with coding, preferably in Python or C++
- Exposure to industrial automation technologies such as PLCs, sensors, drives, and conveyors
- Solid understanding of fundamental electronics concepts including voltage, current, sensors, and PCB basics
- Demonstrated curiosity and willingness to ask questions, take initiative, and rapidly acquire new technical skills
- Strong attention to detail with good documentation practices
- Effective teamwork and communication abilities
- Familiarity with Linux environments, including basic command-line usage, file system navigation, and log analysis
- Experience using version control systems such as Git and GitHub
- Basic knowledge of systems engineering concepts, including interfaces, failure modes, and system integration
- Hands-on experience with personal projects involving robotics
- Ability to thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments requiring strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Aptitude for understanding and working with complex technical products
