The Role
Square's rapidly growing financing platform, Square Lending, has revolutionized the way businesses obtain the funding needed to achieve their goals. Unlike traditional business financing products, Square Lending offers are extended to pre-qualified sellers based on their business performance, funds are deposited as soon as the next business day, and are customizable based on the Seller's needs. Since the product launched in 2014, Square Lending has extended more than $20 billion to over two million sellers worldwide.
As a Lead Engineer for the Servicing team on the Lending Platform, you will drive initiatives to build a platform to handle the repayment orchestration, obligation tracking, and balance accuracy for the loan and credit card products that we offer Square sellers in the US and internationally. You will guide the technical direction for the organization so that we can provide a configurable platform that enhances developer velocity while maintaining Seller trust through a high level of accuracy and reliability in our systems.
This role operates on the critical path of all our lending products, and has a direct impact on the success of the business. You will partner closely with teams responsible for underwriting, applications, origination, accounting, capital markets, and new product launches. You will work with product managers, financial analysts, data scientists, operations, and other engineering teams across Square to build compelling solutions to drive business growth, while focusing on reliability, flexibility, and engineering excellence.
Work from anywhere: This role can be performed from any location in US or Canada.
You Will

  • Lead the technical strategy and direction of the team and broader Lending Organization to improve configurability of our lending capabilities and maintain Seller trust.
  • Oversee major initiatives, and ensure the success of team projects to expand access to credit for our sellers and build the future of our servicing platform.
  • Engage in critical technical, design, and product discussions with leaders across our product, data science, operations, and engineering organizations.
  • Learn and model complex financial instruments to identify commonalities and drive improvements.
  • Participate in Square-wide technical leadership initiatives to develop and implement best practices.
  • Mentor and develop engineering talent, foster a culture of growth and excellence.
  • Drive innovation by partnering across Square to develop new products


You Have

  • 12+ years of industry experience building and operating high-quality software.
  • Passion for Square's mission.
  • Interest or relevant experience in lending, finance, accounting, or similar domains and building resilient systems to support high-throughput real-world applications.
  • Experience operating business critical services in highly regulated environments where accuracy is paramount.
  • Proven track record in leading cross-organizational complex projects (spanning 1+ years) to successful completion.
  • Experience elevating development skills by leading, mentoring, and supporting engineering orgs.
  • Strong communication skills and customer empathy, with the ability to understand and address customer needs.
  • Experience collaborating effectively with product managers, data analysts, other engineering and cross-functional leaders.
  • Excellent software development and architectural design skills with proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as Ruby, Java, Go, Python.
