Mission Summary:

Join us and help us solve some of the most challenging technical problems facing the autonomous driving industry. You will help redefine safe transportation by directly contributing to Motional’s driverless future.

As part of our Perception-Prediction autonomy systems team, you will use systematic analysis and empirical methods to understand the performance of Motional’s perception and prediction models, and their impact on the comfort and safety of the driverless vehicle. You will help improve and validate the robustness, performance, and safety of our driverless vehicle.

What you'll be doing:

  • You will work with our detection, tracking, and prediction teams to improve perception and prediction evaluation pipelines. You will help derive performance targets and metrics that ensure driverless safety,  while delivering performance and comfort
  • Help establish methods to validate perception and prediction subsystems against our driverless readiness criteria, which you will help define
  • Develop methods to improve the performance of existing online and offline perception and prediction pipelines, and collaborate cross-functionally to understand, document, and make tradeoffs between potential solutions
  • You will become comfortable with our development tool chain to perform hands-on tests and analyses to identify issues and/or weaknesses in our system and recommend potential solutions.  You will derive offline solutions to improve the model performance, and online solutions to monitor and mitigate any hazard associated with the weaknesses.  If interested, you will take part in implementing those solutions
  • Write reusable, high quality, data analysis software or models to enable accurate, efficient, and scalable analysis and data driven decisions
  • Define and strategize interfaces between Autonomous Vehicle system modules; generating design strategies to maintain useful abstraction barriers between components. Over time, you will expand the scope of your systems engineering to broader aspects of the AV
  • Articulate decisions and their rationales to drive cross system alignments and/or partner team implementations

What we're looking for:

  • MS in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field with 2 years of professional experience in owning the technical responsibility over a complex system, preferably a machine learning based perception subsystem.  Alternatively, a BS in Engineering with 4 years of professional experience in owning the technical responsibility over a complex system preferably a perception sub-system
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills; effective in engaging cross teams for problem solving
  • Highly proficient in Python
  • Interested in and comfortable working with C, C++ software
  • Familiar with core ML algorithm concepts and best practices

Bonus points:

  • Ph.D. in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science or a related field
  • Experience with computer vision, or perception systems with different sensing modalities such as camera, lidar or radar
  • Experience in developing, integrating, and/or validating machine learning based perception models
  • Industry research or production experience
  • Experience in high performance and real-time computing systems
  • Experience with UML, simulation tools, SQL, Matlab
  • Experience with professional software development
