About Opendoor

Founded in 2014, Opendoor’s mission is to empower everyone with the freedom to move. We believe the traditional real estate process is broken and our goal is simple: build a digital, end-to-end customer experience that makes buying and selling a home simple, certain and fast. We have assembled a dedicated team with diverse backgrounds to support more than 100,000 homes bought and sold with us and the customers who have selected Opendoor as a trusted partner in handling one of their largest financial transactions. But the work is far from over as we continue to grow in new markets. Transforming the real estate industry takes tenacity and dedication. It takes problem solvers and builders. It takes a tight knit community of teammates doing the best work of their lives, pushing one another to transform a complicated process into a simple one.  So where do you fit in? Whether you’re passionate about real estate, people, numbers, words, code, or strategy -- we have a place for you. Real estate is broken. Come help us fix it.

About the Team

Opendoor is looking for a Staff Product Designer to help build the future of our consumer experience. As a designer on the Growth team, you’ll have clear, measurable impact on the business— ranging from revolutionizing the top-of-funnel system, to onboarding new customers and reengaging existing ones sitting on the fence.

We appreciate designers who think deeply about people and processes, not just pixels, and love getting their hands dirty with customer research. The ideal designer for this team has experience building service-oriented consumer products.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Ideate: Work with Product, Engineering, Research, and Operations to design and visualize prototype the future of our end-to-end customer experience.
  • Research: Partner with Research to conduct user interviews and determine common pain points, product improvements and priorities. Conduct light-weight research independently to inform design decisions.
  • Create: Design information architecture diagrams, wireframes, flows, high-fidelity mock-ups, and prototype for your features.
  • Communicate: Showcase your vision and rationale behind design decisions to stakeholders and your team.
  • Collaborate: Work closely with Product, Engineering, and Operations to validate the feasibility of your work and ensure high-quality implementation.

Skills Needed:

  • Experience: At least 8 years of relevant experience as an individual contributor on an in-house product design team.
  • Portfolio: A portfolio with native and/or web projects that highlights your approach to problem solving, as well as the solutions themselves. Case studies should demonstrate your skills in research, user experience, visual design, and interaction design.
  • Figma Mastery: You live and breathe within Figma, where you’ve mastered the essential elements of design.
  • Prototyping: Strong skills using rich, interactive prototyping within Figma and/or tools like Framer.
  • Communication: Excellent communication and storytelling skills, in writing and in speaking. Has a well-defined design process.
  • Teamwork: Experience partnering with Product, Engineering, and Research to craft broader product strategy.

Bonus Points if:

  • Mentoring: Experience guiding and mentoring other members of the Product Design team.
  • Design systems: Experience building design systems collaboratively from the ground up.
  • Coding: Understanding of front-end frameworks like Angular and React. Front-end development skills are a plus.

Location:

Hybrid - Hybrid roles require role responsibilities to be performed in the office for a portion of the week, with an option to work remotely. Candidates must be based within a 50-mile commuting distance of the specified office location.

Compensation:

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The U.S. pay range for this position is $180,000 - $270,000 annually. Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for the job location during the hiring process. We also offer a comprehensive package of benefits including paid time off, 12 paid holidays per year, medical/dental/vision insurance, basic life insurance, and 401(k) to eligible employees.

An Insider's view of Opendoor

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

My team works with our sales and support operators. We manage our multiple telephony platforms, including our call center software. Last year, we replaced our old call center vendor solution with a new custom-built telephony platform. Building the unique features each team has been one of our central challenges for much of the past year.

Maggie

Sr. Software Engineer

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

I started at Opendoor as an intern, responsible for small improvements to our home valuation model’s accuracy. Now, I am one of the leaders on our team - I’m responsible for setting team vision, overseeing systems design for other IC’s, and leading P0 initiatives such as a pricing workflow overhaul that we launched after COVID-19.

Daniel

Software Engineer

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

Analytical problem solving requires creativity too. I always encourage my team to consider all the tradeoffs between different options - what if you need to solve the problem in 1 day? How about 6 months? How about unlimited compute resources? We often come up with more creative and better solutions when we intentionally consider all options.

Data Science Manager
