We are looking for a staff writer who is informed and passionate about business, entrepreneurship, work, and management, and who brings to the table nuanced understanding, proven reporting and writing skills, a roster of sources, and a long list of story ideas. You should be capable of covering a range of topics across business, with core areas of focus where you want to dig in. You must be ready to get your hands dirty (and have fun!) creating something new.

Medium isn’t where readers will find aggregation or commodity news. Instead, we’re looking for stories that will reach and resonate with a broad audience, one that’s interested in understanding the cycle of value creation and destruction that underpins the way our economy and society function-- and in reading great stories about fascinating people and companies making big bets. The right person for this role will be eager to tell these stories, and have a never-ending list of ideas for their next great piece.

Our ideal candidate has at least four years experience covering business as a writer. They should feel comfortable writing across a range of formats, from shorter reports to longer features and columns, and bring great pitches to the table every single day. 

What will you do?

• Be an authoritative voice for a new Medium publication covering business, entrepreneurship, work, and management
• Pitch, report, and write several stories per week, particularly timely news analysis and reported stories
• Offer thought leadership and subject area expertise on topics that matter to our audience
• Think creatively about what storytelling can mean and be ready and willing to experiment and try new things, from newsletters to podcasts to special projects
• Coordinate with design, product, and audience teams as needed on story packaging and distribution
• Bring good ideas and a good attitude to work every day

Who are you?

• You have 4+ years of writing experience in journalism
• You are passionate about business, economics, and cycle of value creation and destruction
• You bring a long list of story ideas and the sources and expertise to execute on them
• You care about words and storytelling, and are a stickler for top-tier editorial standards and quality prose
• You are curious and display excellent taste and judgment
• You are a straightforward and effective communicator
• You like working on a team and can help improve other people’s ideas through collaboration and brainstorming
• You believe that good stories can come from anywhere
