Here you will join a small, tightly-knit collective of engineers, researchers, and designers committed to solving long-term problems in robotics and AI. You will undertake an effort to make our technology useful to the average person. Through a simple and delightful Human-Machine Interface (HMI), the applications you create will distill the complex problems we are solving into intuitive interactions, providing an overall sense of control, empowerment, and safety.

We are seeking a UI designer that is passionate about next-generation technology and can define a visual framework for our robot HMI’s. The aesthetic you define should reflect the futuristic aspirations of Vicarious without sacrificing usability and accessibility. In this role you will work closely with the UX Design Lead to create a visual style, as well as the foundation of a scalable design system/library which will facilitate Human-Robot Interaction across several interfaces. This is a 3-5 week contract where you will work up to 40 hours per week. All work is remote.

Your responsibilities

• Define an overall visual design aesthetic for use in HMI design, through a style guide communicating key aspects of the visual language.
• Help define reusable interaction patterns that scale to Vicarious interfaces across various applications.
• Develop and deliver a foundational set of design components as part of a design library. 
• Collaborate with UX designers to apply visual styles to HMI wireframes.
• Collaborate with UI engineers to bring designs to life.
• Follow and implement best practices for human-machine-interface (HMI) design for industrial robots and automation.
• Design industry-level HMIs for Vicarious AI’s robotic products

Background/experience

• 5+ years designing for web, mobile, or embedded systems.
• Experience defining a brand or look-and-feel for a digital technology product.
• Experience creating a style guide and design libraryUnderstand limitations in modern day UI frameworks to ensure UI designs can be implemented efficiently.
• A body of work showcasing a human-centered design process.
• Experience designing for accessibility.
• Background in Human-Factors, HCI, or Industrial design a plus.
