Position description

Calico is seeking an experienced and motivated Laboratory Automation Engineer to join our team. This position will support internal research groups, migrating assays and processes from bench-top to automated liquid handling systems and integrated robotic platforms. The ideal candidate would also take on novel engineering projects; building prototype hardware and software for use in our research labs.

This work is highly collaborative, and the candidate must be able to work with scientists of all levels and from many different disciplines. Creativity, analytical thinking, and the ability to troubleshoot and solve problems while maintaining a positive attitude are critical to success in this position.

Position requirements

  • Experience programming automated liquid handling systems (e.g. Tecan EVO or Fluent, Agilent Bravo, Beckman Coulter FX/NX, Hamilton STAR or Vantage)
  • Experience with integrated robotic systems and automation scheduling software (e.g. Agilent VWorks, Biosero GreenButtonGo, PAA Overlord)
  • Experience with microbiology, molecular biology, flow cytometry, high content analysis, high throughput screening, genomics and sequencing, mass spectrometry, or other standard life-science laboratory workflows
  • Ability to manage and contribute to multiple concurrent projects and to adapt to changing priorities and requirements inherent in early stage research
  • BS/MS in science or engineering discipline, minimum 6 years of relevant experience, PhD not required

Additional preferred skills and experience

  • Software development:
    • Experience with any major programming language (C#.NET, C/C++, Python)
    • Development of desktop and embedded applications for controlling physical devices
  • Mechanical design using CAD software and rapid prototyping with 3D printers, laser cutters, and/or CNC mills
  • Basic electronic circuit design, layout, and assembly
  • Experience with industrial automation motion control, robotics, sensors, and/or machine vision
  • Experience with statistics and data analysis software, especially data reduction and visualization
