Senior Hardware Design Engineer


Fastly is growing our Hardware Engineering team and is looking for a seasoned engineer to help craft our future hardware platforms. The ideal candidate would have in-depth knowledge and a proven track record at both hardware design and vendor quality management with both ODM and OEM vendors building scale out compute, storage and networking platforms.

Working with new and existing systems vendors along with internal Fastly teams, you would help lead the hardware design process around server hardware. You'd be engaging in all phases of the hardware design lifecycle including requirements gathering, qualification, managing design responses from our vendors, and ongoing quality controls.  

Come help craft the next generation of edge compute hardware finding the balance between extreme performance, serviceability and cost efficiencies! 

Responsibilities

  • Define architecture and create specifications for reliable, scalable semi-custom and off the shelf datacenter equipment
  • Continually review vendor roadmaps staying informed on changes in the industry while providing influence to Fastly interests
  • Work with vendors to develop commodity base datacenter hardware build around Fastly requirements
  • Develop selection criteria and play a key role in selecting commodity hardware manufacturers.
  • Evaluation and qualification of server hardware and components.
  • Evaluate and qualify system firmware and BIOS; triage hardware/software issues.
  • Engage internal development teams to ensure that application compatibility and performance meet expectations.
  • Lead pilot programs to bring new hardware concepts to reality
  • Represent Fastly at OCP and other industry events.
  • Lead vendor quality programs including First Article Inspections, random site audits, and root cause activities.
  • Develop and lead testing of hardware platform

Prior Experience and Qualifications

  • 8-10 years of direct experience in a technical engineering role focusing specifically around compute or storage hardware.
  • Able to independently decompose, design, and execute implementation projects delivered with testing and documentation.
  • Knowledge of both ODM and OEM design principles and processes
  • Experience with at least 3 system vendors including Dell, HPE, Hyve, QCT etc
  • Deep understanding of storage subsystems including NVMe, SAS, SATA, etc
  • Deep understanding of network subsystems including 10GE, 25GE, and 100GE, etc.
  • Knowledge in open source operating systems, hypervisors, and orchestration frameworks.
  • Experience with L11 integration documentation
  • Knowledge in management platforms and tools; console servers, IPMI, SSH, TFTP, PXE, and telemetry systems such as Prometheus.
  • Working knowledge of hardware provisioning platforms (MaaS, Foreman, etc)

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs of equipment as required. Ability to exert yourself physically over extended periods of time, including frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling and lifting. 
  • Ability to work non-standard hours, including working weekends, holidays, on shift-based schedules and on-call rotations as required.
