Software Manager - Embedded Platform, Camera
At Cisco Meraki, we know that technology can connect, empower, and drive us. Our mission is to simplify technology so our customers can focus on what's most meaningful to them: their students, patients, customers, and businesses. We’re making IT and security easier, faster, and smarter with technology that simply works.
Meraki MV is an enterprise-grade security camera system, and is a new and quickly growing product line. The cameras are cloud-managed, but store and process video at the edge, enabling privacy, data sovereignty, and scalability. Our mission is to bring Meraki simplicity to the physical security market, leaving our users delighted as they solve problems and answer questions using our system.
As the head of the embedded platform team, you will lead our efforts to bridge the hardware-to-software gap when bringing new camera models online. You will direct a team of 4-6 engineers, providing them technical mentorship as well as planning the team’s roadmap. Your team’s mission is to build and support new cameras by specifying, integrating, and customizing vendor software, iterating/experimenting on prototype hardware, and enabling your peer software teams to build cross-product features that work on all camera models.
As the manager of the embedded platform team, you will:
- Assist in bringing up new camera platforms, owning projects from block-diagram concepts, to prototype boards, all the way to shipping products
- Collaborate with our Hardware team on vendor/chipset selection and influence high-level architecture for new Meraki camera products.
- Develop and maintain relationships with vendor software teams to bring up and deliver camera software features
- Lead your team to design and build systems, pipelines and APIs upon which the rest of the Meraki software team can deliver video, audio, analytic, connectivity and other user-facing features
- Guide and enable your team to build a software platform that we can support, and carry forward for many years - systems and designs that last
- Select and follow appropriate agile and other software development principles so your team consistently delivers high quality, working software
- Write performance reviews and encourage the professional growth of everyone on your team
- Identify gaps in your team’s knowledge or ability to execute, and work with our recruiters to build out your team
- Be a part of the leadership of the larger MV team: weighing in on development priorities, projects going on across the team, etc.
You are ideal for this role if you have:
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
- 3+ years of leadership experience on projects involving substantial planning and coordination across time zones
- 4+ years of experience managing and leading teams of software engineers
- 6+ years of software development experience
- Experience with Linux-based embedded platform bringup, bootloaders and/or device driver development
- Strong understanding of Operating Systems, Multi-threaded Programming and Platform Architecture (CPU, Memory Hierarchy, Storage Subsystems and High Speed Communication Bus Protocols - PCIe/USB)
- Expert knowledge of embedded systems development concepts, including cross-platform development and build tools (GNU toolchain, OpenWRT, buildroot, Yocto), bootloaders (U-Boot, coreboot, UEFI), JTAG debuggers and Logic Analyzers.
- Experience reading schematics and datasheets
Bonus points for:
- Knowledge of camera and video technologies (h.264, DSPs, computer vision, system resource protection)
- Knowledge of wireless protocols (e.g., 802.11, Bluetooth)
- Experience with wired networking (LAN and WAN) and TCP/IP suite of protocols
