Why Virtual Economy?
The Virtual Economy team owns all aspects of Robux, Roblox’s Virtual Currency. Most of Roblox revenue flows through Robux systems.
As a Principal Software Engineer reporting to our Senior Engineering Manager working on the Virtual Economy team, you will work with a talented team to maintain the reliability and the scale of Robux-related systems. This includes the currency foundation, a platform to enable Purchasing Transactions and related reporting systems. Those systems enable developers to monetize their games on Roblox, earning hundreds of millions of dollars per year, while processing billions of transactions.
The ideal candidate is someone with extensive experience in Distributed Systems and an interest in getting involved in product/business questions to ensure the team is building the right products to improve Roblox monetization.
You will work at our HQ in San Mateo, CA 3 days per week (Tuesdays to Thursdays).
You Will:
- Build experiences for a global community of over 70 million daily active users
- Develop backend services that scale to billions of products and transactions in a reliable, secure manner.
- Work with the product, data science, and design to help refine strategy and requirements.
- Contribute to overall system design, gather feedback, and iterate where necessary.
- Be a tech lead for the team and mentor junior engineers
- Help recruit future talent for the team
You Have:
- 10+ years experience Designing and developing a wide-array of software products
- 10+ years experience working on large-scale, consumer-facing mobile and web applications
- 7+ years working with REST, API design patterns, and scalable containerized systems and microservices
- A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent professional experience) in Computer Science or related engineering field
- Passion about working on the virtual economy in the metaverse
- A focus on writing clear, readable, testable, modular, and monitored code
- A data-driven mindset with a focus to provide quality metrics and monitoring

For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits.
Annual Salary Range
$331,640—$383,910 USD
Roles that are based in our San Mateo, CA Headquarters are in-office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional in-office on Monday and Friday (unless otherwise noted).
