How These SF Companies Are Offering Outsized Perks to Place Top Talent
What do the Golden State Warriors and today’s top tech companies have in common? Investing in top talent.
The Warriors entered the 2022-23 NBA season as defending champions, and as November proceeds, they’ll have the opportunity to face off against teams eager to snatch victory from the reigning champs.
But to keep those teams at bay and their team above the rest, the Warriors have taken on the most expensive payroll in the NBA to retain core talent, including the likes of Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. The Warriors’ investment in attracting top talent seems to be paying dividends: By many accounts, the Warriors are one of the most valuable franchises in the NBA.
This is, it seems, a constant regardless of industry. Be it basketball or medtech, investment in employees pays off in both performance and employee satisfaction. A 2018 report by the Society for Human Resource Management found that 92 percent of employees surveyed said benefits played an important role when weighing job satisfaction.
“Organizations that use benefits as a strategic tool for recruiting and retaining talent reported better overall company performance and above-average effectiveness in recruitment and retention,” the report noted.
So who are the Golden State Warriors of the tech industry, the companies willing to invest in their employees’ success on the road to achieving outsized goals? And what are the benefits beyond payroll that these companies are using to attract talent in a tight labor market? Built In San Francisco looked at four companies offering competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits, investing in employees and realizing team success along the way.
Who they are: PitchBook Data is a financial data and software company providing services to private and public financial markets. An independent subsidiary of financial services firm Morningstar, the company offers its users comprehensive data and analysis through its SaaS platform.

New ideas, enduring values: “We want folks who will push the envelope and bring new ideas to the table,” Mary Catherine Wolfe, senior director of talent acquisition, told Built In San Francisco in June. “At the same time, we want people who are truly excited and motivated by our core product. By hiring people who truly resonate with our values, we are able to add to our culture in an inclusive and thoughtful way.”
What they do: An IT company that offers cloud-managed networking products and platform services, from WiFi and routing to smart cameras and sensors, Cisco Meraki provides for clients ranging from small businesses to global enterprises.

Connecting campuses, transforming education: As universities and college campuses apply lessons learned over the course of the last few years to usher in a new era of digital transformation, Cisco Meraki is providing these educational institutions with much-needed support. The company is helping to facilitate hybrid learning, address the exponential growth in the use of bandwidth on campus networks, transform educational modalities using video and AR/VR tools, and improve security through its cloud-based services.
“Digital transformation is at the core of maintaining a full classroom and an engaged student body,” Cisco Meraki noted in a blog post this October.
Who they are: Using a secure cloud-based infrastructure, Rune Labs’ software platform helps partners in the medtech and pharmaceutical industries ingest, organize and analyze brain data gathered during clinical trials and routine patient care.

Who they are: By directly integrating into online marketplaces and channels to manage the entire fulfillment process, Deliverr helps businesses provide one- to two-day shipping to their customers. The company operates a network of more than 50 warehouses using state-of-the-art logistics technology.

Democratizing fulfillment: “Every merchant I’ve spoken to wants to offer fast, free shipping to customers, but the cost and complexity are simply impossible for most to manage,” Chief Revenue Officer Soumya Srinagesh Tulloss said in an interview with Built In Chicago in April. “Deliverr’s mission is to democratize fast fulfillment and enable any merchant to access the billion-dollar logistics network that only the largest retailers can traditionally afford. This mission instantly resonated with me.”
