Netflix is continuing to invest in its cloud gaming platform after launching the service in 2021. This year, the streaming platform said it will release 40 new games for subscribers and will continue developing 70 games with its partners, including major gaming studios like Ubisoft

This year we’re going to continue building our portfolio — and that means new games every month. Members will discover indie darlings, award-winning hits, RPGs, narrative adventures, puzzle games and everything in between, and we’re working with the world’s leading studios to bring you these games,” Leanne Loombe, Netflix’s VP of external games, wrote in a company blog post.

Netflix’s subscribers can access the games for free, but they can only be played on Android and Apple phones and tablets. The games can be viewed on Netflix but users have to download an app for each game through the App Store or Google Play. According to The Verge, Netflix is exploring cloud gaming options that would allow users to play games without downloading an app.

The continued investment in gaming will enable the streaming giant to produce games that complement its streaming content, including movies and television shows. Netflix already tested this idea with Too Hot to Handle: Love is a Game, which was based on the show Too Hot to Handle. With the 40 games slated to release this year and others in development, Netflix said it may continue exploring this concept because it’s a great way to “expand the worlds created in Netflix shows and films.

The streaming platform also announced it is developing 16 games through its in-house studio. The company did not say when those games are expected to be released.

Netflix has made several acquisitions in the past year to boost its gaming arm. The company acquired Dallas-based Boss Fight Entertainment last March and Seattle-based Spry Fox in November.
