About the role:
You will own the creation, maintenance, and measurement of our internal engineering documentation and engineering blog posts. As the first dedicated technical writer on our engineering team, you will write content targeted to engineers. You will edit and organize documentation and blog posts drafted by our engineers and coach them to improve their writing skills.
Your mission is to create great documentation, training materials, and blog posts that turbocharge the Fivetran engineering team. You will:
- Organize our process documentation to help our engineering teams perform and execute well
- Maintain internal documentation about our services and features so that we can provide rock-solid infrastructure
- Create training materials for our engineers to accelerate their onboarding and grow their skills
- Collaborate on blog posts that help us inspire and recruit outside engineers by educating them about Fivetran’s technology
While you will be our first engineering technical writer, you will not be the only technical writer. You will be embedded in the engineering team and will also join the technical writing team. We are a small, collegial team distributed among our global offices who, thus far, have focused on user-facing documentation.
As a Technical Writer at Fivetran you will:
- Review and update Technology Principles documentation
- Review and update our Engineering Strategy documentation across our global teams
- Inventory our internal engineering documentation and propose a plan to improve its structure
- Develop a tight feedback loop with the engineering team so that engineers consistently work with you to update documentation after making changes that alter data flow, class structure, or interfaces
What you bring to the table:
- Ability to write clear and concise technical documentation
- Strong technical editing skills
- Great English business writing skills
- Ability to organize complex documentation sets
- Experience writing for a developer audience
- Obsessive about getting the details correct
- Ability to take initiative and be proactive in identifying problems and opportunities
- Can-do attitude
- Great collaboration skills
- Experience working with globally-distributed teams
Nice-to-haves:
- Great diagramming skills
- Experience working in an Agile environment
- Experience with SaaS companies
