Position description:
Calico is seeking a summer intern to join our Genomics lab. To succeed, you will need to be an enthusiastic team player, detail-oriented, extremely organized and comfortable working on complex problems. In this position, you will learn the basics of mammalian cell culture, RNA extraction, and Illumina sequencing. You will also assist team members with other lab tasks as needed. The Genomics lab values mentoring and collaboration and has created a supportive environment for learning on the job. The successful candidate will work closely with members of the lab on learning new skills and applying them to an ongoing R&D project. Responsibilities:
- Perform basic cell culture techniques
- Extract RNA from cell cultures
- Prepare RNA libraries and perform QC steps
- Run samples on an Illumina NovaSeq sequencer
Position requirements:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, genetics, genome sciences, bioengineering, or related field
- Previous hands-on lab experience in molecular biology, genetics, genome sciences, bioengineering, or related field
- Knowledge of genomics methods and, in particular, next-gen sequencing
- Strong sense of collaborative teamwork, respectful of others, possess good communication skills
- Flexible, able to respond quickly to shifting priorities and able to multitask
- Available to work in South San Francisco throughout June, July and August of 2020
Nice to have:
- Working knowledge of NGS tools or Python
