We are looking for a Senior Buyer to oversee Grove Collaborative’s and Roven’s third party product. The role is responsible for creating and executing strategies to deliver productive, innovative, profitable third party product assortments on our platforms. It also oversees all third party vendor relationships, driving mutually beneficial joint business plans, cost negotiations, and vendor funded marketing activations.

Core cross functional partners for the role are site merchandising, marketing, inventory management, analytics, creative. 

This role reports directly to Grove’s VP of Merchandising. It currently oversees an Associate Buyer and Buying Coordinator. The team is scoped to double before the end of the year.

Your Role & Impact

  • ASSORTMENT PLANNING:
  • Develop and execute product assortment strategies that contribute to measurable growth in the sales, margin conversion, and order size for Grove Collaborative and Roven.
  • Expand the assortment into identified high margin, category white space. Focus and refine assortments for underproductive, low margin, low rating items.
  • Regularly track and report on product performance of the assortment and pivot future assortment strategies as needed to optimize the assortment to the business
  • In partnership with the Inventory and Site Merchandising teams, conduct quarterly hindsights on merchandising initiatives and competitive landscape to inform future strategic planning
  • As our owned / private label brands portfolio expands, drive strategies to innovate the third party assortment, using it as a testing ground for Grove and Roven to inform future owned brand development
  • VENDOR RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Manage relationships with third party vendors (bid and small!) including weekly update calls and quarterly business planning with the big vendors
  • Negotiate advantageous product costing to further Grove’s aggressive margin growth goals
  • Strategize innovative, robust annual plans for vendor funded marketing activations. Align on those plans with vendors. Partner with marketing / site merchandising to deliver them. Track results to validate ROI and substantiate funding credit claims.
  • MARKETING:
  • Partner with marketing leads and site merchandising to ensure high performing, margin accretive, third party products are featured in marketing campaigns and available site placements
  • For vendor funded marketing activations, partner closely with marketing and content teams to project manage activations to launch, driving this process
  • LEADERSHIP:
  • Oversee a team of 2, with plans to grow to 4 before the end of 2020
  • Develop and inspire a high performing team of owners who will be known as a center of excellence
  • Hire a Buyer upon starting
  • Grow an associate to manager level by mid-year through coaching and mentoring
  • Quickly develop strong cross-functional relationships that are positive, respectful, and collaborative
  • OTHER:
  • Travel to relevant product expos / conferences and to top vendors - travel approx. 5% of year

About You

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Passionate about ecommerce and striking the optimal balance between data driven and brand building
  • 3+ years of experience in product buying with an emphasis on third party vendors, not vertical product dev
  • 2+ years of experience managing direct reports
  • Must have a passion for eco/sustainable commerce 
  • Subscription and/or auto-replenishment business model experience preferred.
  • Proven data-driven decision making skills, demonstrating the ability to gather, manipulate, and interpret large data sets to inform high level strategy
  • Advanced Excel skills; with strong computer and systems understanding; Looker experience a plus!
  • Exceptional leadership traits and strong sense for mentoring others
  • Ability to make timely decisions, work in a fast pace and often-changing environment
  • Ability to identify, prioritize and advocate for the work with the best ROI
  • Start up experience preferred
