The Opportunity
As Afterpay's Underwriting Specialist, you'll be responsible for designing and building a specialist underwriting function from scratch in United States and Canada. You will also develop the necessary standards, procedures, and policies for ensuring we have an escalated first line of defence function that can, at scale, review and underwrite complex mid market and enterprise merchants.

• Strong communication, organizational, problem solving, and analytical skills. The candidate should have the ability to establish credibility and strong partnerships with sales teams and other merchant risk analysts.
• Perform basic and in-depth underwriting of new merchant accounts and existing accounts on a periodic basis. Ability to read and interpret company financial documents is a must
• Assess business model risk and determine credit exposure risk on new or existing merchants
• Provide concise oral and written summary recommendations regarding findings, issues and mitigants as needed
• Work with the Product Team, Sales, Merchant Services, Account Management and Customer Service teams to resolve merchant risk issues and provide guidance on overall risk tolerance and policy

• Minimum 5 years payments acquiring experience in Risk or Underwriting, fraud investigation, chargeback analysis, and/or compliance risk, ideally within a payments or e-commerce business
• Bachelor's degree or higher (Finance, Accounting, or similar degree preferred)
• Strong verbal and written communication skills along with stakeholder management
• Proficiency in data analysis (Advanced Excel skills required; SQL/Tableau skills preferred)
• Experience managing merchant risk across multiple geographic regions
• Self-motivated, well-presented, disciplined and methodical
• High attention to detail and ability to multitask
• Exceptional time management skills
• Comfortable working and making impactful decisions in a fast-paced environment
• Detective sense. You have a natural intuition when something isn’t right and are quickly able to identify the issue
• Able to problem solve and innovatively work your way around roadblocks
• Maintains enthusiasm and calm demeanour in stressful situations
