Company Overview

Deepgram is a foundational AI company on a mission to transform human-machine interaction using natural language. We give any developer access to the fastest, most powerful voice AI platform including access to models for speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and spoken language understanding with just an API call. From transcription to sentiment analysis to voice synthesis, Deepgram is the preferred partner for builders of voice AI applications.

We are seeking a Backend Developer to join our remote, full stack team focused on product-led growth and billing. In this role, you'll develop and optimize backend systems to support Deepgram’s speech to text, text to speech, and audio intelligence features. Our team owns APIs for billing, monitoring usage, managing projects, and setting up contracts. Check out the developer documentation for examples.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, develop, deploy, and monitor backend services using Rust, Nomad, and PostgreSQL

  • Collaborate with and advise product managers, business stakeholders, and other software engineers to create highly performant and scalable solutions

  • Investigate and resolve internal customer issues related to contracts, usage, and billing

  • Develop deep expertise in a few areas, but regularly dive into new parts of the codebase

You’ll Love This Role If You

  • Love learning new languages (We’ll teach you Rust)

  • Enjoy schema design and iterating on queries until you get it right

  • Value focus time with No Meeting Wednesdays and a lightweight meeting schedule that doesn’t get in the way of focus time

It’s Important To Us That You Have

  • Proven industry experience building backend services, designing APIs, and working with relational databases

  • Experience optimizing database performance through efficient schema design, query optimization, and indexing strategies

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities, ideally at an early stage start up

  • Ability to translate product or design requirements into parallelizable and incrementally releasable tasks

  • Experience balancing short-term deliverables with making long-term investments for efficiency, scale, and performance

It Would Be Great if You Had

  • Experience with Rust

  • Previous work in high transaction services like message queue systems or billing systems

  • Proven skills with frontend technologies like React, Typescript, or Elm

  • Prior experience with voice technology and AI-driven applications

Backed by prominent investors including Y Combinator, Madrona, Tiger Global, Wing VC and NVIDIA, Deepgram has raised over $85 million in total funding after closing our Series B funding round last year. If you're looking to work on cutting-edge technology and make a significant impact in the AI industry, we'd love to hear from you!

Deepgram is an equal opportunity employer. We want all voices and perspectives represented in our workforce. We are a curious bunch focused on collaboration and doing the right thing. An Insider's view of Deepgram

What's something quirky about your company?

I love the variety of backgrounds, and not just in job skills. When you have a conversation with someone at DG you are likely to hear a crazy story from somewhere interesting in the world or a weird fact from a random field that will make you smile and think. Fun, interesting and diverse people make a real difference to the culture.

Jeff "Susan" Ward

Sr. Research Scientist

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

As a Product Designer, collaboration is key. I bring in coworkers from different departments for workshops, ideation, and feedback sessions. I got regular meetings with Marketing to make sure design stay consistent between all touch points. Collaboration with engineers is a daily thing. Based on the project, I’m looking for insight from everyone.

Ingrid Elise Dorai-Rekaa

Senior Product Designer

What are some things you learned at the company?

Deepgram has been the perfect blend of skills I already have and skill I want to learn. In particular I have enjoyed working in a high performance computing environment using modern development tools like the Rust programming language. And among many of the most skilled engineers I've had the privilege to call colleagues.

Randy Barlow

We are providing the North Star for Deepgram as a purpose-driven company that inspires people to build amazing things with voice.

Mara Lubell

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

Flexible! There were moments where I had to suddenly take care of my family and Deepgram has always respected my work-life balance. Obstacles in life can be unexpected and Deepgram understands and trusts that I will achieve my goals while still providing support for my family.
