About Opendoor

Founded in 2014, Opendoor’s mission is to empower everyone with the freedom to move. We believe the traditional real estate process is broken and our goal is simple: build a digital, end-to-end customer experience that makes buying and selling a home simple, certain and fast. We have assembled a dedicated team with diverse backgrounds to support more than 100,000 homes bought and sold with us and the customers who have selected Opendoor as a trusted partner in handling one of their largest financial transactions. But the work is far from over as we continue to grow in new markets. Transforming the real estate industry takes tenacity and dedication. It takes problem solvers and builders. It takes a tight knit community of teammates doing the best work of their lives, pushing one another to transform a complicated process into a simple one.  So where do you fit in? Whether you’re passionate about real estate, people, numbers, words, code, or strategy -- we have a place for you. Real estate is broken. Come help us fix it.

About the TeamFinance & Strategy (F&S)

The Business Intelligence team within F&S is responsible for planning, building, interpreting, and advising on the reporting that helps executives understand the state of our business and make strategic decisions on how to most effectively grow the company. Members of this team are also expected to learn in-depth context across the business in order to build data models which partner teams will utilize to build increasingly refined financial models. This role is only two levels removed from the CFO of the company, with a high degree of visibility and responsibility, making it ideal for future career growth and flexibility.

Partnerships

The above team grew out of the Partnerships team’s reporting function, largely due to the breadth and depth of knowledge inherent to it. The Partnerships team is responsible for interfacing with third-parties so that home sellers can find Opendoor’s value proposition across the channels they are already familiar with (e.g. Zillow, Redfin, Realtor.com, “traditional” real estate agents, and new home builders). This role will continue to support the reporting needs of Partnerships, which has continuously grown into an ever more meaningful portion of Opendoor’s business.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for key analytics reporting within the F&S and Partnerships functions.
  • Design and build out ad-hoc and evergreen analyses to support channel owners in understanding different states of their business, running operations, and recommending investment and product decisions
  • Build expertise in the Opendoor data infrastructure, developing a deep understanding of several layers of sources and field definitions, and use this knowledge to improve data quality and reporting consistency
  • Acquire domain expertise in real estate, with a focus on iBuying, online real estate, new home construction sales, and real estate agents
  • Advise on and produce results for A/B tests and experiments in order to determine the effectiveness of initiatives like marketing campaigns, partner incentives, and product variations
  • Connect with team members regularly to gather requirements for creating and updating crucial reporting, make sure they understand how to use and read results of what you have built, and construct narratives to communicate to the team based on your domain and technical expertise

Skills Needed:

  • 6+ years technical experience, with 3+ years full-time work experience in an analytical role that regularly leveraged SQL
  • Familiarity with one or more data visualization / BI tools, such as QuickSight, Tableau, Looker, or Mode
  • Strong query debugging and reverse engineering skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technical skills, concepts, and tools on the job

Bonus Points if:

  • Past experience within a finance, product, or operations team
  • Experience in a startup-like environment
  • Familiarity with a real estate field (e.g. technology, brokerage, construction, finance)
  • Experience with Python and/or machine learning

Location:

OD Remote - Remote roles in the US are available in all states EXCEPT Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, or any US Territories.  Strong preference for candidates located in Phoenix, Atlanta, or Dallas/Ft. Worth.

An Insider's view of Opendoor

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

My team works with our sales and support operators. We manage our multiple telephony platforms, including our call center software. Last year, we replaced our old call center vendor solution with a new custom-built telephony platform. Building the unique features each team has been one of our central challenges for much of the past year.

Maggie

Sr. Software Engineer

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

I started at Opendoor as an intern, responsible for small improvements to our home valuation model’s accuracy. Now, I am one of the leaders on our team - I’m responsible for setting team vision, overseeing systems design for other IC’s, and leading P0 initiatives such as a pricing workflow overhaul that we launched after COVID-19.

Daniel

Software Engineer

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

Analytical problem solving requires creativity too. I always encourage my team to consider all the tradeoffs between different options - what if you need to solve the problem in 1 day? How about 6 months? How about unlimited compute resources? We often come up with more creative and better solutions when we intentionally consider all options.

Sherry

Data Science Manager
