GRAIL is seeking a Staff -level Software Engineer to help us evolve our data platform by supporting the growing data needs of GRAIL’s clinical and research activities. In this role you are a key member of our data platform backend software team, and you will have the opportunity to advance GRAIL's pioneering applications and make a profound difference in the lives of those affected by cancer!

This a hybrid (on/off-site) role located in our Menlo Park, CA HQ with 2 days a week onsite. Due to the hybrid requirement at this point we are looking for an exceptional software engineer, confident in data platforms, who is located within driving distance of Menlo Park.

Responsibilities

Be a part of a highly collaborative team that focuses on delivering value to cross-functional partners by providing secure access to data.
Drive the design, deployment, and delivery of data infrastructure, standardized clinical data models, datasets, and tools.
Collaborate with other software teams and work cross-functionally with Research, Clinical Data Management, and Medical Affairs to deliver end-to-end data solutions.
Ensure that the delivered software systems and datasets adhere to software quality, clinical compliance, data sequestration, and privacy standards.
Provide mentorship to other engineers on software engineering and data engineering best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidate will have a BS/BA and 8+ years, Masters and 5+ years or PhD and 2+ years of experience in software development.
Extensive experience in developing data pipelines using scalable cloud-based data warehouses / data lakes on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Extensive experience in using software to develop tools.
Experience with relational databases, data modeling principles, data pipeline tools and workflow engines, e.g. DBT, Apache Airflow, AWS GLUE, Spark.
Significant experience with DevOps, including CI/CD pipelines, containerized deployment/Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code/Terraform.
Substantial experience working with clinical study data, healthcare data, Real-World Evidence.
Substantial experience with object-oriented and/or functional programming.
Ability to embrace uncertainty, navigate ambiguity, and collaborate with product teams and stakeholders to refine requirements and drive towards clear engineering objectives and designs.
Openness to giving and receiving critical feedback in a constructive manner.

Highly Preferred Skills

Prior industry experience at a healthcare / biotech / life sciences company.
Familiarity with Software as a Medical Device and experience working in a regulated environment.
Familiarity with Golang, Python, and R.
Familiarity with Clinical Data Model standards (e.g. OMOP, CDISC) and Healthcare Data standards (e.g. FHIR, HL7 v2).
Experience building microservices and web applications.
Experience with supporting data science / machine learning data pipelines.

The estimated, full-time, annual base pay scale for this position is $180,000 - $210,000. Actual base pay will consider skills, experience, and location.

Based on the role, colleagues may be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan tied to company and individual performance, or an incentive plan. We also offer a long-term incentive plan to align company and colleague success over time.

A huge data set with an even bigger impact

“Cancer is a nasty, diverse disease that can affect widely different regions in the genome,” Principal Scientist Joerg Bredno said, and understanding how and why cells change isn’t easy. Luckily, his team works with more than 12 petabytes of molecular data — which translates to more than 1 million gigabytes — and a high-performance scientific computing environment that can handle analysis at that scale. With these tools, Bredno’s team is building an even larger training data set for the next generation of GRAIL’s early detection, multi-cancer screening test, slated to roll out this year.

It is rewarding that we can see, learn and share relevant insights from our data that so far doesn't exist anywhere else in the world in this form.
