People always come first at these six Bay Area companies.

Whether offering outstanding professional opportunities or consistently checking in on personal wellness, these workplaces go above and beyond when it comes to prioritizing their employees.

This care and consideration also extends to customers. Employees at these companies are passionate about tackling complex technical projects and serving clients in meaningful work that ranges from transforming cancer care to ensuring cloud security.

For these standout qualities and more, Built In San Francisco is featuring these six workplaces — all hiring now — as our companies of the month.

What Zscaler does: Creator of the Zero Trust Exchange Platform, Zscaler shifts IT departments away from traditional network infrastructure and toward fast, secure cloud-based resources. The San Jose company was founded in 2007 by Jay Chaudhry, who brings more than 25 years of security industry experience.

Uplifting team culture: “Everyone is accessible, and every conversation is a notable improvement to my day because we all bring something fundamental to the table that can be shared in the name of growth and positive momentum,” Caralee Robards, large enterprise regional account manager, told Built In San Francisco in October 2022. “We inspire each other. Even when there’s fun-spirited competition in play, each of us is rooting for the other to succeed at all times.”

In the news: In April, Zscaler announced that it had been named a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Security Service Edge for the second consecutive year.

What GRAIL does: Based in Menlo Park, California, GRAIL aims to transform cancer care with early detection technology. Composed of scientists, engineers and clinicians, the healthcare company leverages next-generation sequencing and population-scale clinical studies.

Pursuing professional growth: “Beyond the rewarding work and constant learning, perhaps the most meaningful aspect of my experience has been hiring and leading a team of data product managers,” Claire O’Connell, associate director of technical product management, told Built In San Francisco in March. “I continue to learn, grow and be constructively challenged every day and am confident that this experience will serve me well in the future as my career develops.”

In the news: In October 2022, GRAIL and Carrum Health announced a partnership through which eligible employees with Carrum Health benefits could access Galleri, GRAIL’s multi-cancer early detection test.

What Simpplr does: Simpplr offers an AI-powered employee experience platform. For more than 700 customers, including big names such as Zoom, Moderna and Eurostar, Simpplr acts as an internal social network, allowing employees to share content, take surveys and more. While based in Redwood City, California, the company also has offices in India, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Putting the “ppl” in Simpplr:Everyone at Simpplr is so passionate about creating a product and company that puts people first, always. You can feel the buzz of excitement in every companywide meeting and interaction. Our mission is to transform the work experience of billions of people across the world and every Simpplifier embodies this in every way using our values of Simplicity, Innovation, and Excellence,” said Sr. HR Ops Analyst Viviana Serrato.

In the news: In May, Simpplr announced it had raised $70 million, which it planned to invest in growing the company’s workforce and product research and development.

What Lumos does: With its SaaS management and identity governance software, Lumos enables IT and security teams to oversee their companies’ apps from a unified platform. By providing insight into app usage and spending, Lumos helps teams reduce software costs, eliminate IT tickets and tighten security.

Brilliant opportunities: “I’ve felt zero limiting factors working on projects at Lumos,” Erin Geiger, content strategy team member, told Built In San Francisco in September 2022. “Everything seems up for grabs — in an organized way, of course — and if you have an interest in it, a place on a project can usually be made for you.”

In the news: In January, Lumos launched its app governance platform, which automates access requests, expedites user access reviews and reduces SaaS spending.

What Sendbird does: Sendbird is a conversation platform that powers in-app chat, voice and video engagements. On a mission to build connections in a digital world, the San Mateo-based software company builds scalable chat APIs to help brands and developers make their apps more social.

Chance to spread your wings: “What I love about Sendbird is the fact that every day could bring a new challenge, which naturally promotes personal growth and evolution,” Lucy Lei, lead customer success manager, told Built In San Francisco in June 2022. “What’s even better is having a support system in colleagues and teams to help execute on those ideas and vision.”

In the news: In May, Sendbird launched a low-code API powered by ChatGPT for web and mobile apps. This technology allows developers and product managers to leverage generative AI to personalize users’ experiences.
