Somewear Labs, a critical missions communications provider, announced it raised $13.7 million in Series A funding on Thursday. The round was led by a group of angel investors, including former AT&T CEO David Dorman, several Fortune 500 CEOs and notable investors such as Silver Lake Partners co-CEO Egon Durban, former IBM CEO Sam Palmisano and Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins, among others.

Founded in 2017 by former Tesla, Apple and Intuit engineers, Somewear creates communications software and off-grid satellite hardware to help commercial and government teams communicate during and keep eyes on high-pressure operations.

For example, Somewear’s technology recently helped firefighters stay connected while fighting the Oak Fire in California, according to the company. Somewear is trusted by a range of customers from individual world travelers traversing difficult terrain to operators at the U.S. Department of Defense.

“Our goal at Somewear has always been to save lives by providing reliable access to information, communications and safety in any environment,” Somewear CEO James Kubrik said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to welcome this exceptionally experienced group of operators and partners who deeply understand how to rapidly scale and deliver cutting-edge technologies like ours to the world’s largest and most important organizations.”

Somewear plans to use its new funding to expand its platform group communication capabilities in remote, denied and harsh operating environments.

The company is also currently hiring for two positions in engineering and operations. More positions may open as Somewear puts its fresh funds to use.
