Wayfair Is Opening a Bay Area Office, Plans to Hire 200 Engineers

E-commerce giant Wayfair lists more than 22 million items for sale ranging from home decor to furniture and hardware.

Furniture retailer Wayfair announced on Wednesday plans to open three new engineering sites in the San Francisco Bay Area, Austin and Toronto, Canada.

Founded in 2002, the e-commerce company is among the top online destinations for home furnishings and decor with more than 22 million items for sale at a given time.

The three new engineering sites will open within the next year, Jim Miller, Wayfair’s chief technology officer, said in a statement.

“These new locations will be an extension of our headquarters in Boston and Berlin and will allow us to continue to build and foster a global community of sophisticated technologists who are powering the best possible shopping experience from home,” Miller said.

Wayfair will initially hire up to 200 engineers, data scientists, analysts, product managers and designers at each of the three new locations. The company plans to hire 1,000 “technologists” globally, according to the statement.

Last year, Wayfair delivered the company’s first profitable quarter since going public in 2014. The company went on to generate $14.1 billion in net revenue last year.

Wayfair has corporate offices in Boston, Berlin and London and has about 16,000 employees with 6,000 located in Boston, according to the company’s Built In page.
