Engineering Manager, Application Observability
About the roleÂ
Chime is looking for an empathetic engineering leader to support Application Observability.Â
Application Observability is an internal service provider with a mission to ensure that teams have telemetry, monitoring, diagnostics, and predictive analytics for their features and services.
You will provide the vision of how Chime approaches observability, work with engineering teams to implement the strategy, and support the engineering team which makes it joyous for our engineers to understand their services. You will be responsible for the hiring and managing of incident specialists, as well as the roadmap, strategy and execution of the overall program.
Chime engineering is growing rapidly, with the expectation that we’ll quadruple in size over the next two years. This is a once-in-a-career opportunity to help shape the culture, processes and identity of a world-changing engineering organization.
This job cannot be performed in the state of Colorado.
In this role, you can expect to
- Hire and support the team of engineers bringing observability technology to Chime,
- Develop the vision, develop a strategy & roadmap, establish team objectives, and deliver an awesome observability strategy. This will involve working closely with many other teams outside of technology and with our technology leaders too!
- Develop, train, staff, and evolve our ability to learn about the resilience of our services, a process to track and report on trends, and manage the portfolio of key actions identified to make Chime more resilient!
- Guide reliability practices through the entire software development lifecycle leveraging proactive activities like architecture reviews, code reviews, creating and advocating fault-tolerant design patterns, capacity planning, and chaos testing
- Listen to and learn from the entire engineering organization -- from new grads to the CTO -- to ensure we’re working on solving the right problems in the right way for the organization
- Pilot and roll-out your initiatives org-wide
- Qualitatively and quantitatively measure success of your initiatives, iterate, improve
- Present on the goals & impact of our work to all levels within the organization

- Are comfortable navigating through ambiguity, while identifying areas for improvement and establishing best practices.
- Have public or user-facing experience in ensuring communications are clear and succinct.
- Can problem solve and translate complicated technical issues into solutions, while being customer obsessed.
- Have an ability to execute on and deliver complex operational projects involving multiple stakeholders.
- Have operational awareness: a sense of the big picture in any organization they inhabit, how team members’ individual goals contribute to that, and how they can help team members navigate best within the big picture.
- Thoughts on how systems are composed of people and technology, how people relate to technology, and how people are a part of resilience.
- Excited about resilience initiatives like SLOs, observability, SRE, designing for fault tolerance, robustness engineering, and promoting team’s to have end-to-end ownership.
