Clinical Lab Associate (Contract)
GRAIL is a healthcare company whose mission is to detect cancer early, when it can be cured. GRAIL is focused on alleviating the global burden of cancer by developing pioneering technology to detect and identify multiple deadly cancer types early. The company is using the power of next-generation sequencing, population-scale clinical studies, and state-of-the-art computer science and data science to enhance the scientific understanding of cancer biology, and to develop its multi-cancer early detection blood test. GRAIL is headquartered in Menlo Park, CA with locations in Washington, D.C., North Carolina, and the United Kingdom. Working directly with Biosample Operations, Pathologists, and the Core lab, you will have a central role in all aspects of evaluating and preparing formaldehyde fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue samples for extraction of genomic DNA(gDNA)! Your main focus on the Pathology team will center on receipt of FFPE tissue slides, assessing and annotating tissue morphology/quality metrics in a laboratory information management system (LIMS), and following a Pathologist’s instructions to prepare and label tubes of macro-dissected tissues. Additional projects may include microtome sectioning of paraffin blocks and H&E staining. The ideal candidate must have proven ability to work productively in cross-functional groups under fast paced timelines.
You Will:
- Assist with tissue sample tracking during all steps of processing: Tissue specimen receipt, tissue quality assessment, data capture of tissue metrics into LIMS, tissue macrodissection and vial creation and labeling.
- Assist with managing all specimen transport transactions into and out of tissue lab, ensuring proper sign-off and specimen tracking for all specimens received
- Assist with Pathology workflow by prioritizing and organizing patient slide sets for Pathology review, marking, and dissection
- Efficiently and accurately macro-dissect pre-selected areas of tissue from unstained slides using guide H&E slides, Pathologist’s directions, and a background in human tissue Pathology
- Efficiently and reliably section blocks, mount tissue sections on slides, and H&E staining of slides.
- Assist Biosample Operations team in tissue receipt and addressing manifest and quality issues
- Have the opportunity to train on FFPE gDNA extraction and QC, and plasma isolation from preserved human blood
- Ensure meticulous record keeping in LIMS and Google sheets
- Comply with GRAIL quality and safety protocols, and following GRAIL standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Have the ability to work independently and identify, communicate and help resolve sample discrepancies as they arise
Your Background Should Include:
- Bachelor’s degree in a biological science-related field
- 2+ years experience working in a biological laboratory environment with knowledge of biosafety, histology and tissue processing, DNA extraction and following established SOPs
- Experience using and aligning microscopes for Köhler illumination
- Basic knowledge of tissue morphology / Pathology
- Experience with digital tissue analysis a plus
- Experience with Google Doc Suite and LIMS
- Experience with FFPE gDNA extraction a plus
- Industry experience a plus
