Check is leading a revolution in the payroll industry. Payroll is the backbone of the US economy, and yet it has not undergone significant innovation in decades. We invented the embedded payroll space to change that (see: Check: Solving the $150 Billion Payroll Problem, Bank On It; Episode 438), both for the business owners who spend countless hours per week running payroll and for the millions of Americans who depend on their next paycheck. At Check, our mission is to empower the most innovative software platforms to create new payroll businesses, and enable those businesses to transform the way companies pay their employees.

Check’s culture is intensely caring: to each other as teammates, to our partners, and to the businesses and workers we serve. Our teams are made up of creative problem solvers and empathetic cross-functional collaborators who can simplify the complexities of payroll. We bring hustle and grit to our day-to-day, while building enduring solutions and relationships.

For this role, we are seeking an entrepreneurial Product Manager who will have a hand in building Check’s most critical infrastructure to run payroll and file taxes for the tens of thousands of businesses and hundreds of thousands of workers on top of our platform. This Product Manager will serve as a leader who deeply understands our technology stack, how payroll and tax work, and how to design and grow our infrastructure to be the most reliable and efficient in the entire payroll industry. They will work closely with Check leadership, engineers, internal operators, and our partners to deliver a high-quality product that will be responsible for tax filing and payments for thousands of companies quarterly.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as editor of Check’s Tax product to make it reliable, accurate, and intuitively designed
  • Drive Check’s product execution with an opinionated perspective, seeking to push new boundaries in Payroll and ensure we’re solving the right customer problems with urgency
  • Work closely with experts across our business, engineering, and payroll operations to understand how our Tax processing and architecture works
  • Deeply understand payroll and tax requirements, including compliance and regulation standards, to level up the reliability, efficiency, and scalability of our most important infrastructure
  • Working with engineering and operations, develop a detailed roadmap for how we will scale our core Tax infrastructure

Many backgrounds could fit this role, but ideal candidates will have some or all of the following:

  • 4+ years of experience in product management for technology companies serving enterprise businesses.
  • Experience in working in very complex domains with detailed regulatory and operational requirements. Payroll and tax expertise is not required but is a bonus
  • Experience leading large, cross-functional product initiatives that spanned multiple quarters and drove significant business impact
  • Experience in working in situations with high ambiguity
  • Passion for diving into technical and operational details and becoming an expert in your domain
  • A deep passion for the customers you serve and a high standard for execution
  • An ability to work with a variety of stakeholders of varying backgrounds to drive alignment and positive outcomes

For full-time employees, Check offers company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, short-term/long-term disability, and basic life insurance coverage, effective on their first day of work. We also provide stock options, flexible PTO and sick leave, 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave for all new parents, flexible return-to-work, 9 annual holidays, a 401k retirement plan, and a $100 monthly stipend for home internet and mobile phone expenses.

  • The expected range in San Francisco, NYC, LA, and Seattle is between $193,000 and $227,500.
  • The expected range for all other locations is between $164,000 and $ 193,500.
