2026 Summer Intern - Discovery Oncology
Department Summary
The Department of Discovery Oncology at Genentech seeks a highly talented and motivated intern to investigate fundamental mechanisms of cellular stress and adaptive responses in cancer-relevant model systems. The intern will contribute to ongoing discovery research efforts by applying molecular, cellular, and biochemical techniques (in particular chromatin biology techniques such as ATAC-seq and ChIP-seq) to characterize stress-associated transcriptional responses. This position provides hands-on experience in experimental biology embedded within a translational research environment, with exposure to how basic mechanistic insight supports therapeutic discovery.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, onsite.
The Opportunity
Work in a collaborative environment with other scientists in the group to design and execute experiments.
Keep detailed records of the research findings using an electronic notebook.
Communicate and present results to a diverse group of scientists during internal meetings.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
Who You Are
Required Education:
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
Required Majors:
Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Cancer Biology, Biochemistry, or related field.
Required Skills:
Hands-on research experience in a biology lab environment with prior experience in mammalian cell culture.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Able to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
Experience in basic molecular, cellular, and biochemical techniques including immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation.
Experience in chromatin biology and sequencing-based techniques such as RNA/ATAC/ChIP-seq is a plus.
Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $46.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
