Job Summary

The Account Director I is a senior client-service leader responsible for independently managing key client relationships and overall business performance for assigned accounts. They own client communications with minimal oversight, support account strategy and execution, and are accountable for revenue, financial health, and their book of business. The Account Director directs and empowers cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, strategically aligned work.

Job Responsibilities and Skills

  • Serve as the primary, trusted point of contact for more senior client stakeholders across assigned brands and accounts.
  • Lead the development and refinement of account and tactical strategies that align with client business objectives, brand plans, and medical/scientific priorities.
  • Guide high-level client conversations around priorities, trade-offs, and long-term planning, bringing clear recommendations and options.
  • Anticipate client needs and market shifts and proactively propose solutions, new ideas, and expanded offerings.
  • Own financial performance for assigned accounts, including revenue targets, profitability, and forecasting.
  • Oversee creation and negotiation of scopes of work, fee structures, and change orders, with analytical and execution support from the account team.
  • Monitor budget performance across projects and brands; ensure accurate tracking of hours, fees, and out-of-pocket costs.
  • Identify risks and opportunities relative to financial goals and adjust plans or resource allocations accordingly.
  • Develop contingency plans for addressing revenue losses or paused work.
  • Ensure consistent, high-quality execution across all programs and deliverables within the account or portfolio.
  • Set expectations and standards for project planning, timelines, communication, and quality; intervene as needed to resolve issues.
  • Partner with project management/shared service teams to optimize processes, resourcing, and workflows across brands and workstreams.
  • Maintain oversight of key milestones and deliverables, stepping in to support critical or complex initiatives.
  • Lead and develop a team of client service support aligned to account size and needs
  • Set clear goals and performance expectations for team members and provide regular coaching, feedback, and career development support.
  • Model strong leadership behaviors: accountability, composure under pressure, transparent communication, and collaborative problem solving.
  • Partner with leadership on staffing plans, performance evaluations, and promotion/readiness discussions.
  • Drive organic growth within existing accounts by identifying unmet needs, proposing new initiatives, and expanding the scope of services.
  • Collaborate on new business opportunities (RFIs/RFPs, pitches) by contributing strategic insight, client understanding, and case examples.
  • Help shape the agency’s positioning and offerings in therapeutic and capability areas related to their portfolio.
  • Build a strong external presence with clients and key opinion stakeholders as appropriate to support long-term relationship health.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Typically 7-8+ years of account management/client services experience in medical communications or healthcare agency environments, including prior leadership of complex accounts.
  • Proven track record of independently owning senior client relationships and leading multi-channel medical communications programs.
  • Strong financial acumen, including comfort with revenue planning, forecasting, scope development, and profitability management.
  • Demonstrated success leading and developing teams at multiple levels and navigating matrixed, cross-functional environments.
  • Excellent strategic thinking and communication skills, with the ability to distill complexity into clear recommendations.
  • Deep understanding of medical communications deliverables, industry regulations, and biopharma/med-device dynamics.
