Position Summary:

This position helps patients understand  insurance benefits, referral requirements and network status. Uses effective interpersonal skills to gather necessary patient insurance and demographic information.  Uses expertise in insurance selection to translate the information provided by the patient/guarantor into the computer system to result in prior authorization, notification and accurate claim submission. Utilizes payer eligibility and notification resources to verify patient insurance information and provide notification to payers of inpatient or Emergency Department (ED) admission.   Works closely with PNHS staff and assists with all aspects of the registration process as appropriate.

 

The Account Specialist may contact insurance payers to provide inpatient notification and obtain patient network information.  The position thoroughly researches and resolves concerns related to billing, insurance or the patient’s ability to pay. The Account Specialist must ensure the patient concerns and issues are resolved in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.  The Account Specialist will perform tasks related to: obtaining payment over the telephone from patient/guarantor, resolving patient’s balances by offering and accepting all appropriate payment arrangements, updating incomplete or missing information on accounts to ensure that billing is correct, provide accurate information and facilitate resolution to patients and third party inquiries, offering Financial Assistance and/or directing patients to the appropriate Government Assistance Programs, providing network and benefit information to patients and working with insurance payers. Always representing the company in a professional and positive manner and following the Attorney General Agreement and Federal regulations.  Effective performance of these functions helps the organization achieve strong cash flow and maximize patient’s satisfaction

 

Required Qualifications:

 

Education, Experience or Equivalent Combination:

  • At least one year of customer service experience

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 1-year Customer Service Experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients and families with a variety of developmental and sociocultural backgrounds. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to professionally respond in situations involving conflict and emotion. 
  • Demonstrated written/verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Electronic Medical Record (Epic Cadence/ADT, Prelude and Resolute preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of accounts receivable systems is also helpful.  Knowledge of medical and insurance industry terminology
  • Moderate proficiency with word processing spreadsheets and email is required. 
  • Preference for experience with the Microsoft Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook). 
  • Working knowledge of typical office equipment is expected.
  • Ability to work independently.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Education, Experience or Equivalent Combination:

  • Previous experience in related role

  • High school diploma

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Currently not in a performance development program

  • Proficiency in processing accounts using HealthPartners guidelines 

  • Strong attention to detail and the desire to continue to learn is necessary for on-going accuracy. 

  • Consistent accuracy in registration
