Job Description:

We are currently hiring an Editor to join the DTN/Progressive Farmer content team. This role will collaborate closely with team members to cover national and regional agricultural political news, farm policy, and related topics. The Editor will also serve as a general assignment news reporter, contributing coverage across a range of additional subjects as needed.

What You Will be Responsible For:

  • Reporter will be responsible for both developing her or his own stories, handling stories assigned by the Content manager and working with subject matter editors in covering breaking news and features stories as needed.
  • While this reporter will focus on policy news, the successful candidate will be willing to lend his or her breaking news coverage expertise to other subjects when needed.
  • Reporter will work with various other writers as well to develop packages and series ideas that delve into farm policy topics, and in cultivating sources both in the farm community and in the political arena. 

What You Will Bring to the Position:

  • Demonstrated skills in journalistic reporting, writing and editing. Ability to cover breaking news stories is critical, while also working on a portfolio of broader feature stories for digital and print distribution. Knowledge of editing and posting content within content management systems a plus.
  • Demonstrated news judgment in prioritizing critical beat subjects, to set and meet deadlines, and a clear understanding of the timeliness issues in digital media.  
  • Experience or interest in covering the political beat of agriculture. This requires building knowledge in several areas including: Understanding the business significance to farms and to agriculture in general of farm policies; understanding the regional differences and farm enterprise differences of various proposed farm policies; cultivating sources within various agriculture groups that farmers in national, state, and global matters; Interest in international farm policies and how U.S. and other country policies influence trade.
  • Interest in creating policy and other content that performs well in search engines, social media and other drivers specific to digital media.
  • Interest in data-driven reporting, using both proprietary and public data sources to guide the story line.  
  • Ability to interview farmers, agribusiness leaders and policy makers about key subjects.  
  • Develop ability to lead reporters and reporter teams on beat subjects when required.  
  • Interest in working with freelance writers and photographers to supply additional content when on timely basis.
  • Ability to travel when required.  
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimal Requirements:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent  
  • 3 years experience as reporter or editor.  
  • Working knowledge of U.S. politics and policy creation processes, and interest in becoming the DTN/PF subject matter expert in those areas.  
  • Basic understanding of commodity markets and/or interest in developing knowledge of those markets and how they respond to policy activities.
  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet software, digital photography, videography and social media.  
  • Capacity to work on multiple projects for multiple venues and adhere to news deadlines.

Compensation

  • The targeted hiring base pay range for this position is between $75,000 and $100,000 DTN is a pay for performance organization, which means there is the opportunity to advance your compensation with performance over time. The actual base pay offered for this position will be dependent upon many factors, including but not limited to: prior work experience, training/education, transferable skills, business needs, internal equity and applicable laws. The targeted hiring base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for market competitive variable pay and benefits.
