At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.

Team Overview

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world with a diverse set of content offerings and a world-class product experience that connects the right content with our members. Our team plays a crucial role in this mission: once content is ingested, we make it member-ready. We model new content types across our systems and algorithms, understand, tag, and rate every title, and give the business the platforms to organize and merchandise it.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Product Manager to lead Content Understanding Foundations. In this role, you will define and drive the vision, strategy, and roadmap for how Netflix understands its content, i.e., how we use AI to extract meaning from audiovisual content, and the tools and workflows people use to review, correct, and trust that output.

At its core, Content Understanding Foundations is about two closely connected areas:

  • Content understanding algorithms: AI models that extract key information (e.g., editorial and caution tags, maturity ratings and advisories, and timecode-level annotations) across titles, episodes, and clips, along with the taxonomy principles that enable algorithm development.
  • Content understanding workflows and platforms: a unified, scalable platform where experts review AI output, and where the teams that rely on that output can understand its quality, coverage, and impact.

Today, much of this work is still human-first. Your focus will be on moving us to AI/automation-first workflows, where models do the first pass and people focus on exceptions and quality, without compromising the accuracy and trust our members, partners, and regulators rely on. You will establish how we measure the quality and impact of our content understanding, and use it to decide what to automate, what to improve, and what to retire.

Looking ahead, you will shape what content understanding at Netflix can become. Beyond tags and ratings, you will identify new types of understanding that unlock new member experiences, for example in search, discovery, and personalization, as well as new use cases across the business.

You will partner with a cross-functional team of stunning colleagues across engineering, applied science, data science, and design, and work closely with a broad set of internal stakeholders: the content experts who review and annotate our content, the teams that consume content understanding signals, and our upstream partners on the content side.

What We Offer

As a PM at Netflix, you will:

  • Make a meaningful contribution: We're looking for experienced product leaders who are strategic and eager to roll up their sleeves.
  • Take on big responsibility: Netflix offers PMs autonomy and substantial scope.
  • Be expected to learn every day and to enjoy being curious: You will be building capabilities that don't yet exist. You will work with stunning colleagues who value collaboration and from whom you can learn.
  • Contribute to and benefit from an environment where you can grow your career: Many of our top execs started out as individual contributors.

Who Will Be Successful in This Role?

  • Visionary & strategic: Able to set a long-term vision for content understanding while executing on immediate priorities. Connects dots across domains to identify new opportunities, and brings new perspectives to current assumptions about what content understanding can enable for members and the business.
  • Deep in AI-powered content understanding: Understands how meaning is extracted from audiovisual content, including multimodal models, LLMs and vision-language models, embeddings, evaluation, and human-in-the-loop approaches. Can engage in productive debate with applied scientists on model approaches, quality bars, and tradeoffs, and knows where AI is ready to automate and where human expertise still matters.
  • Stakeholder-first mindset & partnership: Genuinely curious about what internal teams need and why. Builds trust-based relationships with both the experts who use our tools every day and the teams that consume our output, synthesizes diverse and sometimes competing needs into a coherent point of view, and creates a dynamic where partners feel heard, understand tradeoffs, and are invested in shared outcomes.
  • Tools & platform experience: Brings experience building internal tools and platforms that make expert workflows faster and more reliable, and that give stakeholders a clear view of quality and impact. Understands the unique challenge of building for internal users whose work ultimately shows up in front of members.
  • Generalist with depth: Comfortable moving between strategy, algorithms, tooling, and operations, and going deep where it matters.
  • Systems thinker: Comfortable with complex, interconnected systems and data models, and adept at designing scalable, extensible solutions that serve many use cases.
  • Sound judgment: Makes consistently strong decisions in areas of technical and business complexity, including bets that are not easily measurable in the short term. Sequences learnings thoughtfully to inform long-range strategy.
  • Communication & influence: Demonstrates clear, direct, and adaptable written and verbal communication. Synthesizes and simplifies complex topics in ways that enable broad understanding and effective decision-making, and aligns senior stakeholders across teams around a shared vision.
  • Bias toward action & growth mindset: Independently rallies cross-functional teams and drives projects forward with speed. Eager to learn, seek feedback, and continuously improve, and raises the bar on product craft across the broader Netflix product community.

Skills and Experience

  • 7+ years of product management experience, with a proven record of prioritizing and successfully launching impactful capabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience building AI/ML-powered products that extract meaning from audiovisual or other unstructured content (e.g., tagging, classification, annotation, content moderation, or ratings).
  • Experience building internal tools, workflows, or platforms for expert users (e.g., reviewers, annotators, analysts), ideally including human-in-the-loop systems.
  • Experience defining quality and impact measurement for ML-generated output, including evaluation frameworks, quality bars, and metrics that stakeholders can act on.
  • Familiarity with taxonomies, ontologies, or structured metadata, and how they shape algorithm development.
  • Strong track record of building collaborative, trust-based relationships with a broad set of internal stakeholders and engineering and applied science teams.
  • Expertise in developing vision, strategy, and roadmap for a cross-functional space, incorporating broader business context.
  • Experienced in turning clear thinking into well-crafted documents across the product lifecycle: strategy memos, PRDs, and stakeholder communications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical content to a wide range of audiences, including senior leadership.
  • Experience with A/A and A/B testing.
  • Experience in media, entertainment, or content operations is a plus.
