The AI Tooling Engineer will build full-stack applications, design ML pipelines, collaborate with researchers, and integrate open-source frameworks to enhance user interfaces for generative AI.
About Luma AI
Luma's mission is to build multimodal AI to expand human imagination and capabilities. We believe that multimodality is critical for intelligence. To go beyond language models and build more aware, capable and useful systems, the next step function change will come from vision. So we are working on training and scaling up multimodal foundation models for systems that can see and understand, show and explain, and eventually interact with our world to effect change.
Where You Come In
This is a rare opportunity for a product-minded, full-stack engineer to build the bridge between frontier research and real-world creativity. You will be a key member of the applied research team, crafting the bespoke tools, interfaces, and pipelines that make our most advanced model capabilities tangible and intuitive. This isn't a typical tooling role: you will work at the absolute frontier, inventing the user experience for generative Al and shipping the systems that unlock the creative potential of our models for researchers, artists, and partners.
What You'll Do
- Architect and Build the full-stack internal applications, UIs, and dashboards that make our most advanced model behaviors feel intuitive and usable.
- Design and Own the end-to-end pipelines for model experimentation, fine-tuning (e.g., LoRA), and real-time inference, directly accelerating our research velocity.
- Collaborate Directly with world-class researchers and technical artists to rapidly prototype and ship new creative workflows grounded in evolving model capabilities.
- Extend and Integrate critical open-source frameworks like ComfyUI, tailoring them to accelerate our internal research and serve external creative partners.
- Bridge the Gap between R&D and production, contributing to both internal experimentation platforms and the external-facing features that reach millions of users.
Who You Are
- You have 5+ years of professional full-stack engineering experience, with a proven history of shipping user-focused products.
- Deep, hands-on experience with specific fine-tuning or control methods like LoRA and ControlNet.
- You have demonstrated experience with ML pipelines, GPU-based compute (e.g., PyTorch), and model deployment.
- You are a versatile, product-minded engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys working across the entire stack, from UI to infrastructure.
- You have a passion for building usable, elegant tools for technical artists, researchers, or creative professionals.
What Sets You Apart (Bonus Points)
- You have strong proficiency in both Python for backend systems and JavaScript/TypeScript with a modern web framework (e.g., React, Next.js).
- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) in a production environment.
- A portfolio that showcases tools that sit between R&D prototypes and production-quality software.
- Experience building interfaces or systems that help non-engineers (e.g., artists, designers) leverage complex AI models creatively.
